✨ COUNTDOWN: TOP TEN BLOGS OF 2024 ✨ #2: The second most popular blog post of the year comes from Jeff Williams and Alexandra Akaakar, M.Sc and explores the fiscal sponsorship model. Launching a new nonprofit is complex work, requiring founders to be expert generalists who can set up back-office operations, navigate legal certifications, and establish donor cultivation protocols all at once. In response to these challenges, fiscal sponsorship is gaining ground as an increasingly popular alternative model, one that can lift a mission’s administrative burdens and accelerate the work. However, there are caveats and key questions that all partners should consider before stepping into a fiscal sponsorship arrangement. Read more → https://lnkd.in/gR4uPJtZ

Attention all community-engaged 501(c)(3) nonprofits: Are you interested in doing (more) economic justice policy work? Today, we’ve released a playbook to support you in overcoming structural barriers and developing strengths-based strategies. Nonprofits have the distinct opportunity to leverage their expertise, relationships with community members, and communications platforms to bridge the gap between communities and decision-makers, influencing policies that shape banking systems, social benefits like the child tax credit, and economic livelihoods through worker power and reparations. Importantly, this work needs to be funded. That’s why we've also created a short guide for funders outlining meaningful areas for impact in supporting nonprofit-led economic policy change. Fascinating, and sad, article about a large nonprofit that, despite a $20M unrestricted grant from MacKenzie Scott, suddenly shut its doors with no warning. It's worth a read - so much to unpack. I don't know the situation, but of course I wonder what caused this rare and spectacular implosion. The article alludes to some of these possible factors, and I added to the list: - growing too fast? - financial mismanagement? - lack of a clear strategic direction or plan? - too-complicated and/or too-risky business model? - not enough oversight or scrutiny by the Board? - lack of transparency when things became dire? - leadership challenges? - underinvestment in infrastructure? And in the end, beyond the hundreds of laid-off staff, who will suffer most? The low-income Americans who had relied on BDT's services to access public benefits, who are suddenly left without. This to me is what is most heartbreaking. BUT - I would hate to make this a reason (excuse?) for donors to suddenly stop trusting grantees with large unrestricted grants, or worse, to stop giving altogether. Instead, this argues for investing more in nonprofits' resilience and health - to mitigate the risks mentioned above (growing too fast, financial mismanagement, etc). That way, when a large gift comes, they are fully ready and able to turn the funds into impact.
