Some positive conservation news for the Chicago-Calumet River watersheds 🌱💚🌱 NFWF and partners announced six projects selected to receive $2.1 million in grant funding to enhance habitat and greenspace throughout the Chicago-Calumet region. Projects supported by these grants will protect and conserve fish and wildlife habitat, reduce stormwater runoff, engage most-impacted communities in restoration activities, and improve access to greenspace. We can’t wait to see the results! https://loom.ly/GQjCXYg The Chi-Cal River Fund is a partnership among NFWF and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), USDA Forest Service, BNSF Railway, Cleveland-Cliffs, Salesforce, Crown Family Philanthropies, Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, Hunter Family Foundation, the The Joyce Foundation, and the Walder Foundation. 📷: Kayakers in Chicago. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us for the exclusive Grantor’s only BBQ party on Sunday, September 8th! The event was a tremendous success, and we truly enjoyed connecting with you in such a lovely and relaxed atmosphere. We were glad to hear your stories and feedback about why you protected your land. Grantors play an essential role in Owl Creek Conservancy, and it’s no exaggeration to say that we couldn't achieve our goals without your support! What is a Grantor you ask? A Grantor is a landowner who has decided to protect their land via a conservation easement. What is a conservation easement? It is a legally binding agreement between a landowner and a nonprofit land trust (like us!) that limits inappropriate development of a property. The easement is designed to protect the land's conservation values, such as scenic views, wildlife habitat, or agricultural land. Interested in conserving your land? Drop us a line, give us a call or visit our website for more info. Announcement: Funding Opportunity: 2024 Wild & Scenic Rivers Stewardship Partners Funding Summary: For the sixth consecutive year, USDA's Forest Service and the River Network announced funding availability for nonprofit and Tribal organizations working on or planning for stewardship activities on Forest Service-administered Wild & Scenic Rivers (WSR) and surrounding lands. Wild and Scenic Rivers are free-flowing rivers and help preserve recreation, fish and wildlife habitat, water quality, and cultural heritage. $200,000 is available for projects submitted by May 31, 2024. Why it matters: Preserving WSRs reflects the importance of outdoor spaces in our daily mental and physical well-being and fosters greater stewarding of these rivers for the future. This funding expands the diversity of organizations working with the Forest Service and ensures the protection of designated rivers and streams (including cultural, historic, recreational, and fish and wildlife values). Each year, monarch butterflies cycle through several generations before migrating to central Mexico or coastal California. They need large, intact natural landscapes to complete their journey. That’s why NFWF’s Monarch Butterfly and Pollinators Conservation Fund is seeking grant proposals to conserve monarch butterflies and at-risk pollinators. The vast grasslands of the Northern Great Plains are home to a unique assemblage of wildlife well adapted to the wide-open spaces of the prairie. Thanks to generations of land stewardship by ranchers, Native Nations and public agencies, much of the Northern Great Plains remain as native grassland that is productive for people and wildlife. But this resource is also threatened by development, invasive species, and a lack of capacity to manage the grasslands of this vast region. That’s why the Northern Great Plains Program is seeking proposals for projects that voluntarily conserve and restore grasslands and wildlife species. 🌾The Midwest’s native prairie ecosystems are more than just vast stretches of flat, fertile grassland - they are home to a rich diversity of wildflowers and wildlife, thriving in moderate temperatures and rainfall. Unfortunately, these landscapes are disappearing due to development, putting countless species at risk. 🤝That’s why ITC is stepping up! In collaboration with local communities, state and national agencies, and conservation groups, we’re committed to protecting and restoring these endangered ecosystems. Our efforts have already made a positive impact on the Lakeplain Oak Openings region in Michigan and Ohio. Plus, we’ve launched three prairie restoration projects along transmission line corridors in Iowa, covering 42 acres. 🌱Together, we can make a difference! #EnvironmentalPartner https://ow.ly/Rbfg50TX8ZN

Happy National Wildlife Week! Get outside and enjoy some wildlife and nature! There are some links on this post where you can learn more about protecting wildlife! #schoolofnaturalenvironment #SONE #saultcollege
Wildlife represents the very essence of Canada and we're fortunate to have an abundance of wild places and wild species to connect with. It enriches our lives and enhances collective well-being. This #NationalWildlifeWeek, we invite you to connect to nature and learn more about the importance of protecting wildlife through habitat conservation. Together, we can ensure the wildlife we love continue to have places to rest, feed and raise young. In continued efforts to steward the land and the people we impact every day, we are excited to announce that more than 3,700 acres of forestland in Boundary County, Idaho, will remain working lands in perpetuity while securing new recreation opportunities. This project was a great team effort between the Idaho Department of Lands Forest Legacy Program, The Nature Conservancy, Idaho Fish and Game, USDA Forest Service, and Molpus Woodlands Group. “These conservation easements are a good example of a public-private partnership bringing benefit to the region by ensuring these lands continue to contribute to the broader economy while also securing public recreational access in perpetuity,” said Tom Sarno, Global Head of Timberland Investments at Manulife. It's #NationalWildlifeRefugeWeek! Did you know the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the only federal agency dedicated solely to wildlife conservation? With the biodiversity crisis accelerating —21 species declared extinct last year and 2 million at risk—they are critical partners in building wildlife and habitat resiliency. But it’s not just about protecting wildlife; U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is also committed to expanding equitable access to nature. Their Urban Wildlife Conservation Program is making strides in improving green space access in cities across the country. With over 560 national wildlife refuges, including 101 urban ones close to major cities, there’s still more work to do. Local communities are calling for action to protect more land from development and climate impacts.
