The new federal tech employment data is a reminder that focusing on the short-term may cause us to ignore long-term trends. In February, new hiring of tech services and software development personnel resulted in a modest increase in tech industry employment. That was offset by a decline in tech occupations across the economy and a flat month of employer job postings for future tech hiring. DOGE jokes aside, I'm hopeful that a department of government efficiency will be more tactful than an X-like mass firing event. An astute comment on Guy's post by Michael Lombard points out the significant augmentation of the government workforce by contractors who are often a hidden and higher cost. "Cutting employees without actually cutting programs just outsources labor to private sector." IMO, consolidating programs in a way that increases efficiency is the way to go. Take the VA Benefit programs for instance. I went to TAPS (transition benefit) where I was served generic information that never funneled me into another program. I then used my GI Bill (education benefit) in a location where I bought a house (home loan benefit) to prepare myself for the workforce (VR&E benefit) and never once did it seem like any of those programs communicated to each other. "I see that you're getting a cybersecurity degree and bought a house in Colorado, would you be interested in connecting with employers hiring for <Insert Roles Here>?" All the while TAPS could have projected much of this 1 year in advance. The information I provided TAPS while in South Carolina led to generic local hiring fairs. I knew for certain where I would live (not SC), where I would go to school, and what I would be getting a degree in. "You indicated during TAPS that you're interested in software developer roles in Colorado, did you know that ActivateWork offers career-connected education for software development roles in Colorado?" Having visibility on all of that would do wonders to increase efficiency. Programs don't scale like platforms do. And for all the people whose jobs might be impacted by the heavy hand of DOGE, career mobility will be paramount... and contractors don't usually get severance. #YouAreWorthi #DOGE #CareerPathways
