The IPL is back, and so are gutka ads! It's disheartening to see Kapil Dev Nikanj, once a cricket legend and my childhood hero, compromising his integrity for a few rupees. In a recent advertisement, he's seen endorsing Kamla Pasand alongside Chris Gayle, a Caribbean cricket sensation. Kamla Pasand is marketed as pan masala, cleverly bypassing regulations restricting the advertising of tobacco and alcohol products by promoting a non-tobacco item. However, the reality behind Kamla Pasand is that it's essentially gutka, sold discreetly in small plastic sachets under the same brand. The company behind it, KP Group, remains shrouded in mystery with minimal online presence, save for reports of tax evasion and alleged political pay-offs. It's peculiar that a company capable of affording prime-time advertising slots during India's biggest sporting event lacks a basic website or is secretive about its ownership. And yet, it is spending millions promoting its brand. Gutka, a mixture of tobacco, areca nut, and other substances is sold in small plastic sachets. Introduced in the 1970's it is a significant contributor to oral cancer in India. The risk of oral cancer for gutka users is nearly 400 times higher than for non-users. It also causes oral submucous fibrosis, a debilitating condition that progressively reduces mouth opening which has no known cure. The widespread use of gutka is contributing significantly to the approximately 200,000 new cases of oral cancer reported in India every year. During the IPL, influential figures like Kapil Dev unwittingly expose impressionable minds to these health risks, especially in rural and impoverished areas. Sadly, money is more important than people's lives for these heroes. #gutka #kapil #IPL #cancer #tobacco

Nar, no point in getting disheartened. I crossed this stage a couple of years back when many cricketing legends as well as stars like Mary Kom and Nehwal started advertising for online gaming(read gambling) platforms. And there are even sports events that have these platforms as title sponsors!!!

6moVery true sir even the bollywood legends like sir Amitabh bachhan , Akshay kumar sharukh khan , Ajay devgan and many more are doing same thing . Being responsible celebrities and bollywood icon they must avoid such things as youngsters follow them and their deeds. Our young generation is getting distracted due to this. On the name of elaichi hidden agenda of tobacco is being promoted.
