We test multiple concepts in parallel, speeding up the time it takes to find a winning formula. In 2018 we were close to bankruptcy. We only had 1 big partner. We did not diversify our partners and projects. To survive, we had to prototype fast and effectively. We never made the same mistake again. And now we get contracted to prototype for other studios. TLDR: - Above all, survive by shipping - Ship by making all production decisions in terms of a set project budget (i.e. nil sum game) - Aggressively scope the project to reduce risk by minimising unknowns from the start - Design a game that suitably fulfills a player fantasy using linear narrative and MVP systems that don't require iteration - Give yourself as many bailout points in the production plan that would still result in a commercial product - Ship small budget games frequently, so that individual experiences can be sold at a modest price, but your audience can spend far more in aggregate by playing your deep catalogue (which also has algorithmic store discovery benefits) - N.B. this conservative, pragmatic approach may improve developer sustainability, but publishers prefer to sign developers who are willing to risk everything on a moon shot (they don't care about the continued operation of creators, only the opportunity of the product to be an outlier hit)

Hello everyone, how are you all doing? I hope you are all well. I have been absent from the feed for the past few months because there were many things happening at the same time, but in this message, I bring you some news and an update on something I haven't talked about in a while. In the past few months, I have been working on the conception of a business focused on the gaming area, and I am currently seeking information and means to formalize this idea. However, I can already tell you that the initiative involves a game development studio, which fits perfectly with the next topic: our first product currently in development, Project Box. We had some problems between the 3rd and 4th months of this year that caused development to progress slowly, but with re-planning and activity adjustments, we managed to achieve an effective development flow and are now progressing at a fast pace. With all that said, I would like to share with you all a first screenshot of the current state of Project Box. The image below does not represent the final product, but with it, you can already start wondering what is going to happen in this neighborhood.. 👀 As development reaches more advanced stages, I will share more updates with all of you. 🎮 Game Development #1: prototyping is fast but pre-visualisation is even faster Of course, both things do not have to be mutually exclusive, but sometimes developers treat them interchangeably and, in my opinion, unnecessarily. Some features require clarification of the feeling, and just as a prototyping is perfect in terms of mechanics, fantasy, control and general compatibility with all the rest of the mechanics (feeling), previz is an element that is an ideal visual tool for team alignment in terms of vision, timing, responsiveness and overall fantasy, so it doesn’t replace prototype which is crucial it simply adds value on top of an ideation phase. Additionally, if it is well-made, which means that it follows design guidelines, it inspires and gives much clearer guidelines, which makes the team cooperate more effectively by better alignment. Before you jump into the previz, here's a list of things to keep in mind: - Read designs carefully - Talk to designer and create a clear brief - Treat constraints like your friends, meaning: rough timings, controls, camera, responsiveness and posing - Iterate as often as possible, the power of previz is the amount of rounds you can make in hours/days and this is priceless Stay tuned for more ⚔ 🐻

The goal of game dev is not to have everyone doing as much work as possible. Instead, ask how you can do LESS work to get MORE learning, while building only what's needed to create the desired experience for players. Stop focusing on "productivity" as the gold standard for how we measure team and studio success. Seriously, if I had one studio that told me they are great at getting massive amounts of work done but are bad at focusing that work or understanding what they are making... …and another studio that told me they are fantastic at prioritization and knowing the 'why' behind the 'what', but struggle to get a lot of work done... …I'm picking the second studio every time. The better-prioritizing studio is more likely to create a cohesive game AND the productivity problems are typically easier to improve. #gameproduction #gamedevelopment #gameindustry #focus
