Franchise thought of the day with Kristen - We all get the question "Why wouldn't I just go start painting/garage renovation/window cleaning business myself? Why would I pay someone royalties and a franchise fee when nothing is stopping me from going out on my own?" I have the same answers as every other franchising person out there, but it's something I've been chewing on a lot lately, because I KNOW why, but sometimes communicating that in a way that helps the other person to KNOW, is more than just the standard answer we all have, ya know? But one of the things I've been thinking about more lately is research and development. I think that's one of the biggest differentiators between a good franchise and a bad franchise and going it on your own versus being with a franchise. A good franchise is going to do R&D in corporate owned territories. They're going to try out new ideas, re-work them, test them, scrap them, try something new, and do it all over again before they ever present it to a franchisee. When I think about the businesses we've owned, the thing that I think has been the costliest overall is the sheer amount of ideating, testing, re-strategizing, and implementing that we've had to do. It's what makes us good business owners - that we're constantly wanting to grow and evolve with our clients and their needs - but it's also a significant investment on the part of the business owner. That's one of the reasons I've liked ResiBrands so much. I've watched behind the scenes as we've tried out ideas, scrapped them, tried something different, had success, launched it to a few franchisees, expanded it to more, and so on. That's SUCH a huge net cost saving for the franchisee, not just financially, but also in terms of time, mental energy, and human capital. But it's also one of those intangibles that the franchisee probably doesn't fully understand the sheer depth of what they are benefiting from. Internally and externally, countless successes can be seen from Steven and Jaime. From their terrific sales performance to their detailed software IQ, and many places in between. But what people can't see on paper/screens is what remarkable humans they are. Their kindness, thoughtfulness, and genuine care for others are qualities that anyone who knows them can attest to. As we all strive for wins along the way in our journey, none of that matters if you're not a good person, doing good things, and making others feel happy along the way. I love having both of these two and their hearts in the Journey Fam. What an incredible ride it’s been since launching the PHX Franchise! 7 years ago I dipped my toe into the world of business ownership. Here are 7 things I’ve learned about entrepreneurship… 1. Go all in and be patient. Your hard work and long hours will pay off. It just may take a little longer than you probably think. It’s all about your trajectory, so when you’re on the right path, keep going and don’t stop. 2. Your first million in ARR is much harder to earn than your second, but that doesn’t mean it comes with any less challenges. Control the controllables, and let the rest roll off your back. 3. Eliminating the mental chaos is hard to figure out, but not impossible. Work/life integration can be achieved once you’ve learned how to work efficiently in flow state. Happiness is the ultimate goal. 4. Make personal development, health, and a positive mindset the priority. Everything else will work itself out. 5. You can do a lot of things on your own, but having amazing people around you helps you grow much farther, faster. 6. Try new things. Take risks. Win or learn. You can and will accomplish more than you think by challenging yourself on purpose. 7. Relationships are your lifeblood. Remain open to new ideas and perspectives. Treat people well, be a resource, and surround yourself with those who inspire and motivate you. Opportunity is everywhere. I am hooked on building and operating great business. I have even bigger goals and dreams now, than I did 7 years ago. For me, there’s always a higher mountain and I love every minute of the climb. Also, listen for feedback from current franchisees on the brand’s stability and support—this can give you a practical view of how the franchise is doing. 4️⃣ Considerations for Evaluating Emerging Franchisors 🌱 Many emerging brands have strong growth potential, but because they’re newer, they may not have an extensive financial track record. When evaluating newer companies, pay extra attention to the franchisor’s investment in support, their plans for system growth, and feedback from early franchisees. These can be valuable indicators of long-term stability. 5️⃣ Assess Growth and Expansion 📈 Financially stable franchises often show steady growth and expansion in terms of new units. However, rapid growth or a high turnover rate may be a red flag, as it could indicate challenges with maintaining stability. Look at how many franchisees are renewing or expanding—this signals long-term confidence in the system.
