Science is key to fight #ClimateChange, but scientific research also has an enviromental impact (we travel to conferences, we use a lot of plastic…) #BISTCommunity seeks to do the best possible science while reducing our enviromental footprint. That's why on #EarthDay we launch a BIST Sustainability Handbook! Written by both researchers and managers at the #BISTCommunity centres and beautifully illustrated by Marina Juanet, this handbook is designed to serve as a practical resource for all members of the community striving to adopt more sustainable practices. ➡ https://bit.ly/4b1THE8 Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) ICFO ICIQ Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia (ICN2) IFAE IRB Barcelona

Very excited for this year's My Green Lab global summit, September 18th and 19th! We have an incredible lineup of innovative speakers, leaders, and organizations at the forefront of sustainability. We are calling on the scientific community to "raise the bar" and rise above the greenwash to ensure lasting industry transformation through sustainability. Here's a quick preview of my opening message: · Pilot projects must expand into organization-wide initiatives. · Part-time 'green lab' staff should be given full-time roles, and the resources needed to succeed. · Policy incentives should evolve from being supported by a few funders and government agencies to the global standard · Data on green lab solutions must be continuously improved and easily accessible · First-party claims must be replaced with third-party certifications and standards · Impact reduction estimates must become accurate measurable reductions · Certified Green Labs must become the norm, not the exception Register today for My Green Lab Global Summit 2024. I look forward to seeing you there as we collaborate as a global community to ensure science leads in addressing sustainability, starting with its own footprint. https://lnkd.in/dz3CFQFy

Reflection #4: Achieving sustainability requires us to look closely at ALL our habits and activities. 🥼 Lab spaces consume 5–10 times more energy than a similar-sized office, and while research drives innovation, it’s not without environmental cost. Reducing the impact of lab-based research has become my mission 🎯 As researchers, it’s time we rethink our lab habits around waste, water use, re-use, and energy. This challenge started for me in the lab, but it’s since expanded to engaging with faculty, university, and national initiatives. Last year, I was honored with a Making a Difference Award for my work in sustainable labs, and since then, I’ve continued advocating for better support and resources to help labs reduce their environmental footprint. After guiding labs through all levels of the Lab Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF)—including the first Gold LEAF lab awarded at UoM—I can highly recommend it as a great starting point for lab sustainability. ♻️ If you’re passionate about making labs greener, or need some guidance, I’d love to connect!

#BuildingBridgesforaSustainableFuture Last week, I had the opportunity to attend an inspiring conference organized by The Green Institute on sustainability titled "Building Bridges for a Sustainable Future". This event brought together experts from the environmental sector and passionate innovators who shared their ideas on how to create a greener and more resilient future for our planet. One of the key themes of the conference was the importance of collaboration and building bridges between different actors in society. Whether it's governments, businesses, NGOs, or citizens, it is crucial to work together to address the environmental challenges we face. A highlight of the conference was the discussion on technological innovation for sustainability. Concrete examples were presented, demonstrating how technology can be used to create smart and sustainable solutions for the environment, such as renewable energy, eco-friendly transportation, and environmentally friendly agricultural practices. Another important theme addressed during the conference was education and awareness. It was emphasized how essential it is to educate the public on environmental issues and encourage positive behavior changes to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. In conclusion, this conference provided me with an optimistic vision for the future. By building bridges between different actors in society, focusing on innovation and education, we can all contribute to building a sustainable future for our planet. It is time to act together to bring about positive change and build a better world for all. Stay tuned for more inspiring articles and projects on sustainability! #OfficiallyGreen
