There are many other ways to make both an income and an impact without founding or directing an NGO, such as consultancy and employment, which I have and will continue to speak about. You may be: 1. Leadership starts with service. Volunteering can be the first step toward becoming a leader in your field. My journey began in primary school when I was chosen as the Assistant Senior Girl. At the time, I didn’t truly understand what leadership meant ,I thought it was because of my grades. As a shy kid, I didn’t see myself as a leader. In secondary school, I wasn’t interested in leadership roles. I just wanted to enjoy my freedom. But when I reached university, I was unexpectedly made the Assistant Course Rep. That moment opened my eyes to the responsibilities of leadership, even though I still felt unprepared. It wasn’t until NYSC that my real journey of self-discovery and leadership began. During the lockdown, I applied for the YALI Regional Leadership Center West Africa, Accra program, where I not only completed a one-month training but also executed my first community project, #iPickTheTrash, in partnership with Adamu Abubakar This experience taught me the value of leading with purpose and serving others. Through volunteering, I have learned that leadership isn’t just about titles ,it’s about action. It's about making decisions, working in teams, and communicating effectively to inspire change. Every small task, every project, every role contributes to shaping who we become as leaders. If you want to grow as a leader, start by serving others.
