Values Over Rules: Rules have their place, but values are what truly guide behavior in our restaurants. Instead of relying solely on a laundry list of do's and don'ts, I try to focus on cultivating shared values within my team. When everyone is aligned on core principles, decisions become easier, conflicts diminish, and collaboration flourishes. People feel the freedom to screw up and the security that you'll have their back and help them fix the problem. And it doesn't need to be difficult. We just don't punish the behaviours we don't want to see, but instead focusing on rewarding the behaviours we do wish to see. It's nuanced, but so important! Want to explore how I prioritize values over rules, creating a cohesive and purpose-driven workplace where everyone is working towards a common goal. Imagine you're at two different cafes. The first place is a dump. Dirty, bad service, and overpriced drinks. The second place is clean, cozy, great service, and fair prices. Which cafe would you prefer? The second one, right? It's the same with companies. A positive culture is essential for success: ⭐ Attract the best talent ⭐ Retain your employees ⭐ Promote innovation ⭐ Increase productivity ⭐ Create a happy workplace ⭐ Promote teamwork Do this - and your profits will soar. There's a ton of data to back that up. The strongest companies are those that have a healthy culture. ------ P.S. Fostering a Positive Workplace Culture in Coffee Shops In the heart of every successful café is a team that feels valued, heard, and excited to learn, share and grow. Looking at some comments from previous posts, I can clearly see that it is also very important to not just „fill positions“ but enrich lives of our team members in a café. I came across an interesting article from the 🇺🇸: Industry experts like Brooke Gray of Equator Coffees remind us, "Candidates are looking for jobs that are more than just transactional." It's about creating a space where every staff member can pour their passion into their work. By offering TRAINING that goes BEYOND the coffee PRODUCT and into personal development, we nurture baristas who craft not just coffee, but also connections. Isn’t this where great hospitality starts? This quote also reminds me of the book 📖 I just started to read from Will Guidara (Unreasonable Hospitality). Consider Equator Coffees' approach: "We hire for kindness and teach coffee." This is a philosophy that definitely elevates the workplace, fostering a culture where warmth and genuine care for customers become the key for great experiences. As discussed yesterday with a work colleague, a positive workplace is not just about pay; it's about creating an environment where skill and spirit thrive together. So, as we steam milk 🥛 (plus many different dairy milk alternatives) and pull shot after shot, let's also craft careers, mentorships, and a workplace that feels like a second home 🏡. That's another way - apart from automation - how we'll keep the coffee industry vibrant and our teams bustling with drive and innovation. Imagine we would even combine the two: that two me would create the most powerful team. At this point I would also like to connect the previous Gen Z discussion with the current labor shortage. As they are looking for a healthier work-life-balance and more inclusivity, the above mentioned approach might be THE THING for them. Hence, while working in the coffee industry, we do not only need to think how Gen Z is drinking coffee but also how they would like to brew the coffee. It is getting tricky here 😝! It would be great to hear and learn from you, how does your coffee shop nurture your team? #baristalife #positiveworkplace #coffeecommunity #genz #mentorship

Today, it happened at a salad bar. I've visited this place several times, but during my recent visits, I've become increasingly uneasy about how the owner treats her junior colleague. Her diminishing tone, outbursts, and the way she belittles the employee are unsettling. Today, the situation was particularly bad, and I felt compelled to speak up. I privately told the owner that I really appreciate their salads and bowls and would love to continue coming back. However, I felt uncomfortable returning due to the way her employee was treated. Although I had nothing to lose, I still felt uneasy and walked out wondering if I had done the right thing or if I could have handled it better. This experience reminded me of how challenging it can be for employees to speak up about a toxic workplace. The gaslighting, the fear of losing one's job, or being ostracized by colleagues are real concerns. It's crucial to intentionally cultivate healthy cultures and encourage people to speak up by actively soliciting feedback. When I signed the #YouCanCulture book for early readers, I ended almost every note with this sentence: "For a world free from destructive workplace culture." Whether you work in a Fortune 50 corporation or a local salad bar, you should have the right to work in a safe environment. And need to be equipped and empowered to cultivate it. #ToxicCulture #Ethicalleadership #CultureChange

The workplace is like a pot of chai. You’ve got different flavors—some prefer it strong, others like it sweet, and a few want it spicy. But when one person keeps adding sugar while another insists on extra spice, the whole thing starts to boil over. This is exactly what happens when employee conflict or bullying steeps into the workplace! This happens in most organizations, and if left unresolved, it can destroy the very culture of the workplace. Putting some thoughts together…. 1.Set Boundaries Like a Recipe: Just like a chai recipe, each team member should know their role. When you have clear expectations and defined tasks, there's less room for clashes. 2.Chai par Charcha- Encourage Open Communication: Like offering a sip of chai to a colleague, make sure there’s space for everyone’s opinion. A good chat over a chai can solve more problems than silent fuming. 3.Zero Tolerance for Bullies: In a kitchen, a bad cook gets kicked out. In the workplace, bullying should be treated like a burnt pot—immediately addressed and not tolerated. No one should spoil the flavor of the team. 4.Team Building is the Secret Ingredient: The best chai is made with a blend of spices, and so is a great team. Regular team-building activities can help employees understand each other’s flavors, reducing the chances of a conflict brewing. Your workplace will no longer be a pressure cooker. Instead, it will be a harmonious blend of ideas, just like the perfect cup of chai. #culture #leadership #hr #humanresources #conflict #hrcommunity #management #mentalhealth #personaldevelopment

🌯 The best company cultures are a mix of snacks, meals, and feasts. What do I mean? If you ONLY ate snacks your whole life your nutrition would be totally out of whack. If you waited to eat unless it was a huge feast you'd be starving in between. And, while meals are more sustainable we all enjoy the occasional nice meal out. The same holds true for company culture. Having a variety of sustenance ensures the culture doesn't starve or get complacent with empty calories. Here are just a few examples of our snacks, meals, and feasts: 🍬 Snacks: Custom emojis, a "fun" channel, and a new tradition to end the week with the silly question of the week 🥗 Meals: Team meetings where topics range from culture to continuing education, happy hours, virtual hangouts, and anonymous feedback platforms 🥩 🍷 Feasts: Quarterly and annual in-person summits, conferences, dinners, awards, and the #4dayworkweek is obviously huge for us as well How do you "eat" at your organization? What do snacks, meals, and feasts look like for your team? #culture #team
