Last month, Impande’s Maria Ligget and Dr Xoliswa Majola had the privilege of presenting a paper at the Southern Africa Regional Early Childhood Development and Education Conference in Lesotho. The presentation focused on the vital role of support in Early Learning Programs (ELPs). Our findings revealed that ELPs receiving stronger support from Impande saw significant improvements in Early Learning Outcomes Measures (ELOM): Mentored ELPs outperformed others, with 77% of children on track, compared to just 40% of children in programmes with no support from Impande and limited support from NGOs. This data underscores the need for increased investments directed at unsupported ELPs, particularly in underserved communities, to ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed. we commemorated the International Day of the African Child, a day that honors the bravery and resilience of African children, particularly those who participated in the 1976 Soweto Uprising, protesting against education injustice and inequality At Hope for Kids Zimbabwe, we recognize the significance of this day and reaffirm our commitment to promoting and protecting the rights and welfare of children in Africa. We believe every child deserves access to quality education, healthcare and protection from harm. Let's continue to advocate for policies and programs that benefit African children and ensure they grow up in a safe, supportive environment. Key Challenges Facing African Children: - Limited Access to Education: 30 million children in sub-Saharan Africa are out of school - Child Mortality: 1 in 6 children born in sub-Saharan Africa don't live to see their 5th birthday - _Harmful Practices_: child marriage, genital mutilation and other forms of exploitation ² Call to Action: Join us in promoting children's rights and welfare. Together, we can create a brighter future for Africa's children. Reflecting on our recent experience in Tanzania… In June 2023, we ventured to Tanzania for safeguarding seminars, where involving children broke tradition. Typically, sessions separate age groups, but here, unity prevailed. Children actively contributed, fearlessly offering insights. Their courage showcased maturity beyond years, amplifying their voices in safeguarding discussions. This intergenerational approach fostered unity and empathy, empowering youth and reminding adults of their duty. It highlighted Tanzania's cultural richness, emphasizing inclusivity and knowledge accessibility. Our Tanzanian journey inspired us to reshape community learning, emphasizing inclusivity. Let's continue this dialogue for a safer future. #Safeguarding #Inclusivity

Today, on the Day of the African Child, UNICEF Ghana joins the world in commemorating the Soweto Uprising and reaffirming our commitment to the #African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. The bravery of the Soweto students who fought for their right to education serves as a timeless inspiration. Education empowers individuals, fosters active citizenship, and is central to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs). Ghana has made strides in education access, but significant challenges remain, particularly for: - Children with disabilities - Girls - Children in rural areas These inequalities are one of the many reasons to why the African Charter was established - to address them and ensure inclusive, quality education for every child. UNICEF Ghana is committed to working with the Ghanaian government, civil society, and the private sector to: - Invest in targeted teacher training programs - Improve school infrastructure and learning materials - Address the root causes hindering education, such as child labour and early marriages By adopting innovative, regionally focused strategies as envisioned by the African Charter, we can fulfil Ghana's obligations towards education for all. Let's rededicate ourselves to the spirit of the Day of the African Child. Together, through collective action, we can achieve greater progress for all children in Ghana and across the African continent. #DayoftheAfricanChild #Ghana #EducationForAll #AfricanCharter #UNICEF #DAC

In regions like Northern Kivu, Ituri, and Darfur, thousands of women and children are displaced due to conflict and instability. For them, basic needs like safety, healthcare, and education are often inaccessible but they are essential for survival, resilience, and hope. Supporting displaced women with resources and training empowers them to become leaders in their communities, fostering recovery and stability. Meanwhile, access to education and healthcare for children provides a foundation for a brighter future, even in the toughest circumstances. According to UNHCR, providing these vital services not only strengthens resilience but helps pave a path toward long-term peace and development UNHCR on Displacement & Resilience. Additionally, UNICEF’s work in emergencies underscores the critical role of education and health in safeguarding the well-being of displaced children, allowing them to grow and thrive amid crisis UNICEF Education in Emergencies. Let’s continue to support the courageous women and children in these regions. Together, we can make a meaningful impact.

Today on #InternationalDayofCareandSupport, we celebrate the partners involved in the Scaling Care Innovations in Africa initiative. Co-funded by Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada and IDRC, this initiative is actively scaling innovative solutions to address care work challenges in sub-Saharan Africa. Among these solutions are the childcare centres in public markets operated by Wow Mom Kenya in Nairobi, Kenya, to ease a responsibility that disproportionately falls on women. Wow Mom’s work is reshaping the lives of families, opening economic opportunities for women and gathering evidence on the childcare needs of market vendors to advocate for broader policy action. Read more about Wow Mom: https://bit.ly/3Cb6rMi We are also excited to welcome to the initiative two new research projects for policy action to transform elder care and enhance evidence-based policymaking on care work in Botswana, Malawi, Namibia and South Africa, and in Benin and Togo.
