Flywheel Effect In Safety Culture In my nearly 40 years of professional experience, first as an Engineer, then as a HSE Practitioner, and now as a Global HSE Leader, I have come across various spectrums of safety culture maturity. I regard myself to be fortunate to have started my career experiencing first-hand how a matured safety culture works in practice with oil majors Shell, Exxon and BP. One think I realised though, is that transforming safety culture is not as onerous as one thinks…yes, it takes time but all you need is the first step, something to kick-start the change and the journey. I think safety culture transformation can be likened to a large flywheel. Something has to happen to start moving it. It doesn’t have to be a watershed event (like a major accident) but once inertia has been overcome and the wheel is in motion, the transformation journey begins. The next important thing to watch out is its track and direction. The last thing you want is to start turning it uphill…against the tide…you will only face push-back and resistance that will ultimately cause the wheel to roll backwards and stall the transformation journey. It’s therefore important that you steer the wheel towards a downhill track so it gains momentum, where small wins build on each other over time. No doubt the journey will still be full of potholes and obstacles but if it’s headed in the right direction, you’re in safe hands! #safetyculture, #safetyleadership, #safetytraining Check out below https://lnkd.in/gKw7j8Wp

🌍 Celebrating Safety Culture Transformation: The Pori Safety Week Project at Metso’s Research Centre. The Pori Safety Week project application for the Euromines Safety Awards 2024 is a remarkable example of commitment to a safer, more proactive work environment. Addressing high injury rates and aiming for a sustainable cultural shift, the initiative at Metso’s Pori Research Centre introduced comprehensive actions—from safety workshops and near-miss evaluations to hands-on training with tools like gas meters 🔋 and fire extinguishers 🧯. One of the project’s standout achievements is a dramatic reduction in the Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate (#TRIFR), dropping from 11.2 to 0 within 14 months 📉. With over 500 quality risk observations recorded in 2023, the project has cultivated heightened awareness, improved practices, and encouraged staff to actively participate in making Pori safer. ⚙️👷♂️ Pori Safety Week embodies a powerful, holistic approach to workplace safety—one that sets a valuable precedent for safety culture in research and industry settings across Europe. Safety culture: What lies beneath the surface 🧊 When we think about product safety, the visible aspects often come to our mind: safety certifications, product testing, and warning labels. 📜🔧⚠️ But, like an iceberg, the visible part is only the tip, the result of a deeply ingrained safety culture. Most of what makes up a long-lasting and effective safety culture lies beneath the surface, unseen but vital for success. According to the iceberg model, 80% of a true safety culture is invisible. This includes: 🛠️ Engineering practices and team attitudes: Ensuring product safety is prioritized at every stage of development, even when it’s not under immediate scrutiny. 🤝 Leadership Commitment: Leadership must not only actively support and reinforce safety values throughout the product lifecycle, but also lead by example. 🌟 Company values: Integrated safety standards and principles that influence every decision and design. 💡 Mindsets and communication: Open dialogue about potential risks, fostering shared responsibility for product safety and innovation. Building a comprehensive safety culture goes beyond compliance checklists. It’s about instilling trust, accountability, and a commitment to continuous improvement. This transformation requires time, expertise, and specialized knowledge. 🚀 If you're ready to strengthen the invisible core of your product safety culture, the experts at PEM Motion are here to help you integrate these essential values. This is a very great set of Process Safety related cards for quick learning reference! I wonder if it can be adapted to local version, e.g. in Indonesian language...
Packs of European Process Safety Centre Process Safety Fundamentals cards [https://lnkd.in/dfAtD7eW] ready for the PS Congres event [https://pscongres.nl/]. This will be a great conference with a diverse range of topics presented by respected, experienced industry professionals. I'm looking forward to seeing familiar faces, networking with like-minded high-hazard stakeholders and showcasing the Integrity Cards portfolio and Resilium tools & techniques with Jeroen van Dommelen & Paul McCulloch The tag line of this event is "A stronger process safety culture will help to prevent major accidents." and we believe that game-based learning, particularly around bowties & barrier management, can create and sustain understanding & engagement from the top floor to the shopfloor to strengthen Process Safety Culture and 'Making Risk Manageable'. #EPSC #PSCongres #ProcessSafety #ProcessSafetyFundamentals #IntegrityCards #Resilium #Bowties #Gamification #Culture #BarrierManagement
