When the geotechnical report recommends using 2 feet of select fill such as DGA or low plasticity clay (i.e. - PI of less than 25 percent) in the top 2 feet  within the new footprint (plus a horizontal margin of 5 feet), and bedrock is between 0.8 to 8' from grade.

Due to the high seismic demands and the isolated articulation for the Pattullo Bridge Replacement in Canada, modular expansion joints are required to cope with large seismic displacements. Swivel type modular joints can accommodate such large movements in both the longitudinal and transverse directions. The manufacturer-designed joints, provided by MAURER SE, are required to accommodate 975-year seismic displacements with no damage, but for the larger 2475-year seismic events include a fuse mechanism that, in the case of fuse activation, can be easily repaired post-earthquake. This two-level approach allows joint size to be optimized while still protecting the structures against movements that exceed the design demand.
