Nonprofits rely on timely contributions to fund programs, pay staff, and create impact now, not months down the line. Happy Monday - time to talk about distribution timelines! People have been asking me why other platforms don't just match Groundswell's next-day distribution. The answer is, well, complicated (but it shouldn't be). 1. People don't realize that many platforms make money off the delay because of float interest. Therefore they're not incentivized to move the money faster (they're actually incentivized to move it slower!). 2. Their timelines are also likely a remnant of previously having to send funds via paper check, which necessitated the need to aggregate donations into single, less frequent batches. But it's 2024 - these platforms should be sending the vast majority of donations via EFT, rendering this moot. Time to adapt! 3. Some platforms rely entirely on third-party networks to move their funds to charity. This system design then relies on that third party's distribution schedule. This can also layer in additional fees that cut into how much makes it to charity, which isn't always clear to donors. At Groundswell, we've focused from Day 1 on shrinking this timeline. We're proud to say that 100% of our U.S. donations are sent within 24 hours - whether they're being sent by check or EFT. It's what nonprofits deserve, and it's what users should expect.
