The John Lewis Partnership has been through a torrid time. And no one has felt this more than Partners. From my conversations with people I know across all levels of both Waitrose and John Lewis, there has been a sense of frustration that then business has not been focusing on the right things and that it has been drifting away from retail. Dame Sharon White has started to correct this of late, but the blunt truth is that many in the business never thought she was the right person for the job because of her lack of retail experience. The role of Chairman has changed at the Partnership. It used to be somewhat ceremonial - like a head of state - there to represent the interests of the partners and to promote the business. Under that old arrangement the day-to-day businesses were run by managing directors who were highly experienced in retail. Dame Sharon would likely have been good in this old-style Chairman role. But today the structure is different. The Chairman role is more hands on and more operational. That needs someone with deep retail expertise, which is why Jason Tarry's appointment as the next Chairman is highly sensible. There's a lot more work to do, but as I told the Daily Mail - it will give confidence to partners, who have been increasingly nervous and frustrated that the business isn’t focusing on the right things. Being the Boss…   …is one of the greatest honours there is. I have heard a lot of people complain over the years about how tough it is being the boss, but for me, the positives easily outweigh any negatives. Over the coming weeks I’m going to explore what being the boss looks like for me. I’ll be looking at leadership, delegation, personal development, being dynamic as well as growing the team and constantly striving for improvement. And of course, continued growth and expansion plans for the future. My role as the boss has changed significantly since I first launched Paul Fosh Auctions in 2001, nearly 24 years ago. Being the boss then was me essentially being self-employed, working alongside 3 colleagues. Since then, Paul Fosh auctions has grown, almost beyond recognition, and Paul Fosh Lettings was launched a few years ago. So, my role has evolved from simply being self-employed, to being a Manager, Managing Director and these days, a proper business owner. I use those titles only to describe to myself in terms of the evolution of my journey. I am far from the finished article but feel content that I’m on the right path. At 16, I attended a party in a grand Bukit Timah Good Class Bungalow, proudly carrying a Giordano bag with the pair of new jeans I just bought. I was innocent, I didn’t know how “affluent” the people in that party were. Out of nowhere, a stranger approached me and gave me a condescending comment about my choice of brand. And the belittling look in his eyes...It hit me so hard as a 16 year-old boy. His words made me feel small and insignificant. But instead of breaking me, they ignited a fire within. → That moment fueled my determination. It became the driving force behind my journey through countless failures. Whether it was struggling as an AIA agent, sweating over my car grooming business, or losing money in event management. Each setback was painful, but I refused to give up. To anyone who has been mocked or ridiculed, I want you to know: Your worth is not defined by: Where you shop, What you wear, Or what others say about you. → Use those hurtful words as fuel. → Prove them wrong. → Show them your greatness. Life is tough, but so are you. Focus on your goals, take control, design the life you want. And let no one ever have the last say on what you can or cannot do. Prove them wrong. P.S. Sarah and I arrived at the hotel. I am giving a keynote address on the success principles that empower individuals and organizations to take their journey from great to extraordinary. The staff at the Westin blew us away with their hospitality and aloha. They gave us our keys and sent us on our way. It took us a minute to find the room and when we did, it was marvelous! They gave us the presidential penthouse suite. (Here’s a little tour...) As a guy who studies the common traits of extraordinary behavior and achievement, one of the traits I admire most is the joy of living between simplicity and extravagance. As many of you know I started my journey living in a Volkswagen Bus, eating food off my Coleman stove and now living in a tiny home on an organic farm. It is incredibly fulfilling bouncing between these two realities. Having spent time with some of the most successful and wealthy people on this planet, those that can afford and buy all the luxuries one can imagine, I have seen first hand how happy they are with nothing. I know, you’re probably saying, “That’s easy for them, they have everything.” But I can assure that they didn’t always have everything. In fact, many of the truly great visionaries, pioneers and leaders of industry, came from nothing, so they had nothing to lose. They began their journeys from humble beginnings. I have always believed if one can be grateful with little they can be rewarded with a lot. Besides, life is fickle and we never know what’s around the next corner. So appreciate what you have and always make the best of where you are. Today we’re balling in our suite and in a couple of days, we’ll be back at the farm and I’ll be helping Sarah gather cow poop in buckets to fertilize the garden. The Two-Second Decision that Defined His Career 🌞 *Courtesies* Matthews, a smart Sales Manager, on a Sunday evening, was in the parking lot of a big shopping mall. The parking lot was packed. Cars were crawling with anxious drivers hunting for that one vacant slot to park. Matthew's, sharp and aggressive as he was, spotted a vacant space ahead and quickly zoomed in. But, he could also see that another car had reached that spot before him and the old man at the wheel was struggling to reverse his car into the same slot. Matthews beat the old man to it. Matthews felt jubilant - as we all sometimes do with life's little victories. The old man in the other car was very disappointed. He looked Matthews in the eye, but continued to search for another parking slot. Two days later, Matthews was preparing for one of the biggest moments of his career. He was close to winning a big contract for his company. And all that was left now was the formal handshake meeting with the client's CEO. As Mathews walked into the client's office with full confidence and offered his handshake to the CEO, he felt a sudden sense of discomfort. The CEO was the same man from whom he had snatched the parking slot on Sunday. Worse still, the Old man immediately recognized him. And you can guess what happened thereafter... Alas... if only Matthews had been polite enough to consider offering that Old Man the parking slot. The world is divided into two types of people: Those who push open a door, walk through and let it slam behind them. That's the 99% of the population. And there's the 1% who hold it open to allow the trailing person behind to walk through... Learn to do that, and you too could join the select exclusive 1% Super CEO Club in the world ....
