The implementation of Market-Wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) is intrinsically linked to smart meters and the data they provide - one might say there is a bit of a reliance. There's also another reliance - the readiness of energy suppliers and their diverse supply chain to adapt to industry changes and to thrive with them. The people, processes and technologies that underpin billing, metering, customer contact, vulnerability, debt and settlement have to be ready to flex. Not only that, those same systems will have to support demand side response, EV/V2G, flexibility and time of use tariffs (amongst others), in order to foster an innovative and competitive route towards decarbonisation and net zero. Suppliers, their data providers and third-parties therefore all need to be collectively prepared to exercise the new settlement processes, to realise the benefits and to comply with the regulations. It's a great opportunity to use a mandated industry change for service improvement and commercial growth. #MHHS #Settlement #SmartMeters #EnergyData

The Government has big ambitions to provide Britain with cheaper, cleaner power by 2030, transition away from fossil fuels to clean homegrown power, and be Net Zero by 2050. The energy industry and organisations alike, must make big strides to support enablers such as the Market-Wide-Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS). MHHS will enable a smart, flexible energy system where consumers can take control of the energy they use and the prices they pay for it. Our article highlights the key opportunities and challenges that exist for organisations in the delivery of MHHS and argues that becoming an early adopter will attract new customers and reduce costs from day one. The Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) programme has significant implications for power generation. While much of the discussion has centred on customer impacts and demand-side behaviours, the effects on generation are equally important. The programme aims to reduce high carbon generation and ensure value flows through the energy lifecycle, ultimately leading to lower bills! Metering data is crucial for MHHS, but upstream data from generation will also play a key role. Improved insights into actual generation and consumption will enable better planning and reduced waste. Generators will need to enhance their forecasting and scheduling accuracy. A shift in aggregate demand should lead to operational savings by reducing the need to operate generating assets at peak levels and lowering network operating costs. However, the challenge remains whether we have the assets that can respond to price signals in near-real time. Generators will need increasingly flexible assets and storage options to manage demand-side shifts. The programme incentivises fast-response assets, storage, and distributed generation, but it will require more complex data management and detailed operational, risk, and financial planning. ❗ ❗ ❗ Power generators must act now to embrace the MHHS programme. Invest in flexible assets and advanced storage solutions, enhance your forecasting capabilities, and prepare for a more dynamic and data-driven energy market. The future of power generation depends on your ability to adapt and innovate. ❗ ❗ ❗ https://lnkd.in/dNky4eQJ #MHHS #EnergyData #NetZero #EnergyGeneration

I travelled up to Penrith in England’s #Lakedistrict today to spend the day with Electricity North West for their #DSO conference. A really insightful day looking at how ENW are responding to the challenges of moving from a traditional Distribution Network Operator role into #DSO managing bi-directional electricity flows enabling Low Voltage Consumers including Households with Battery Storage, Electric Vehicles and Heat Pumps to participate in the #FlexibilityMarket offering (and being paid for) Flexibility to the Sytem Operator. We heard that key to achieving the Three Ds of #Decentralisation, #Decarbonisation and #Digitalisation is access to accurate and open #Data. We also heard from Ofgem today about their plans to consult next year on proposals to license Aggregation Service Providers and who can group #FlexibleDataInfrastructure on behalf of owners of EVs and Batteries to manage and trade flexibility on their behalf. The key takeaway for me was that the Energy Market continues to develop at a rapid pace, keeping ahead of these changes and the emerging complexities around managing the #Data needed to build a decentralised Energy Market is going to be one of the biggest challenges for Network Operators, Energy Suppliers, Service Providers and Consumers. #Netzero #EnergyandInfrastructure #oneEXL EXL
