Ready, set, soar – at 400 km per hour! 🚁 Airbus Helicopters' high-speed Racer demonstrator kicked off its flight testing campaign today with its maiden flight. Racer builds upon the success of the X3 demonstrator – which combined a traditional main rotor with innovative lateral rotors – by adding innovative new technologies that increase aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. The optimised double-wing design of the Racer seeks to achieve the perfect balance between speed, cost-efficiency and mission performance. Fuel consumption is reduced by 20% thanks to aerodynamic optimisation and an innovative eco-mode propulsion system, the latter of which also contributes to reducing the helicopter's operational acoustic footprint. 🔊 Developed as part of the European Clean Sky 2 project, Racer is the result of cooperation between 40 partners coming from 13 different European countries. 🚁 Exciting Technical Milestone from Airbus Helicopters! 🚁 The Airbus RACER, a groundbreaking high-speed helicopter, has exceeded its target speed, achieving an impressive 420 km/h (227 kts) just two months after its maiden flight. This success is attributed to its unique box-wing design, pusher propellers, and advanced aerodynamics, which together reduce drag and enhance efficiency. Optimised for a cruise over 400 km/h (216 kts), 50% faster than a conventional helicopter, it will consume 15% less fuel per distance at 180 kts (333 km/h) than a helicopter at 130 kts (241 km/h), and aim for a 25% cost reduction per distance. Developed with over 40 partners across 13 countries, the RACER promises a blend of speed, cost-efficiency, and sustainability. “Training in a Level D simulator is considered equivalent to training in an aircraft. It is a zero-flight time training device, which means pilots can train exactly as they would in an aircraft. Level D simulators provide the highest level of realism, to the point that pilots should not be able to distinguish between a Level D simulator and the actual aircraft.” Speaking with Eva International Media, member of our executive board Christian Theuermann discussed the importance of high-fidelity cockpit technology in qualifying the first Level D Bombardier Challenger CL350 full-flight simulator in mainland Europe for Aviation Academy Austria, earlier this year.
