🌱 Navigating Change in Retail 🌱 Dobbies Garden Centres has announced a significant restructuring plan that includes the closure of 17 stores by the end of the year, affecting 465 jobs. These closures are part of an effort to streamline operations and return the business to profitability after reporting substantial financial losses last year. While such changes are challenging, they highlight the importance of adaptability in retail. Dobbies plans to focus on its remaining 60 stores, implementing cost-saving measures and securing a sustainable future. Shona Bredenkamp, Speciality Brands' Operations Executive, Shares Her Insights on a Year of Opportunity, Challenges, and Teamwork.Last year marked a significant milestone for Refinery as they set an ambitious goal to open 40 new stores. The opportunity to expand a retail brand in a challenging socio-economic environment was incredible, and Shona was confident in the team’s ability to achieve this target. In the past 12 months, the team opened a total of 40 stores,  across 17 new towns, with four of those stores in Namibia. This growth has created nearly 300 job opportunities, a source of immense pride. "It wasn’t an easy road, but we successfully reached our goals, and witnessing the rapid growth of our brand has been incredibly rewarding. I would like to thank our incredible partners who have supported us on this journey. Jacques Wessels and his store development team have consistently gone above and beyond to ensure our stores are built on time and to specification. Special thanks  to Craig Beasley from Finance and his team,  the Pepkor Properties team, the Pepkor Installations team, and our outstanding operations field team, who never say no and give their all to every store opening. Navigating Challenges: One of the most significant challenges businesses face is finding the right retail sites at the right time. In a competitive retail environment, every retailer vies for the "best box." A clear location strategy guides every decision, ensuring the right site is chosen. Celebrating Highlights: Every new store opening is a highlight, with each new team welcomed into the "family" and introduced to customers. The operations team has achieved the remarkable feat of setting up a store from construction to opening in just three weeks, showcasing their efficiency and dedication. Expanding into new territories and reaching new customers is a milestone that brings great joy. Shona concludes, "Seeing the brand grow allows me to see the Refiners grow, and that truly excites me. I love my job! I was nervous and excited at the same time when I got the opportunity to come be the primary on site manager in charge of the remodel for the Lenexa, KS Sam’s Club. This week or next the final inspectors and home office representatives will be here to walk off the work to make sure everything is completed. This was no “simple” remodel. Just about every pallet of merchandise changed position in the warehouse and we added a walk in produce and dairy to maximize the effectiveness of our fresh walk space to bring more items and more quantities to our members. It was a tough yet enlightening experience. Here are the top 5 things I’ve learned throughout the whole journey. 1. Plan, plan, and then plan some more With so many fixtures, areas, and functions changing it’s important to slow down and make sure you will have all the materials, supplies, and people you will need when you need them. 2. Sometimes you just need to make a decision No matter how many blueprints, schematics, check off lists, and emails you get you’ll run into a time when you don’t know the answer and might not have anyone to ask. Make the best decision and keep moving forward. 3. People matter The best asset will always be the people around you trying to make the vision come to life. Treat them right and they will go far for you. 4. Don’t be afraid of the dirt Many times I came out of an aisle covered in dust and dirt from moving things around. It’s important to not always let someone else do it for you and to show them you aren’t afraid of letting the dirt get on you too. 5. Learn to lead through change Perhaps the most important thing I’ve learned. Change is constant and will always keep coming. Adapt and overcome and move on to the next while keeping your people at the forefront is most important. People get nervous when they see someone unsure of themselves. I’ve been very appreocative of what I’ve learned and those who’ve mentored me along the way. I’m ready and thrilled to stay after the final walk off and continue to lead through change as we deliver a fantastic new club to our local members who deserve it. Happy National Careers Week! 🌟 Reflecting back to when I was just 18, searching for a part-time job to make ends meet, I never imagined I'd still be with the same company 13 years down the line! My journey with Mitchells and Butlers kicked off at a local Ember Inns, where I vividly recall clumsily pouring my first pint of Stella – more foam than beer! Who would've guessed that years later, I'd be the one coaching teams on the art of the perfect pour? 😄🍺 As I settled into the groove after a month or two, I found myself falling in love with the hospitality industry. When my General Manager transitioned to Vintage Inns, I eagerly followed suit, commencing my progression from team member to Assistant Manager while simultaneously taking on the role of district trainer for my area. Then came a pivotal moment when I stumbled upon a job opening for an Openings Team Trainer. I jumped at the opportunity, went through the interview process, and felt incredibly fortunate to land the role! Openings training became my passion – the thrill of guiding different teams week after week, immersing myself in lots of different brands. After a couple of years, I felt primed for the next phase of my journey and secured a secondment in a Training Partner role, spanning across two divisions. This then became permanent and allowed me to delve deeper into content creation and division-specific intricacies. Fast forward to today, and I'm loving my role as a Recruitment Manager! While this role presents fresh challenges from my prior training roles, I relish the daily interactions with lots of different individuals and diving into PBOs. I count myself incredibly lucky to have crossed paths with amazing colleagues and supportive managers along the way. Hospitality truly offers a myriad of career paths, and I'm grateful for the twists and turns of my journey!
