Earlier in the year, EBONY partnered with a client to launch “Unmasked”, a three-part video series focused on raising awareness of Hydradenitis Suppurativa (HS) within the Black community. Through powerful, authentic stories, the series spotlighted individuals overcoming HS, highlighting their strength, advocacy, and support networks. This partnership not only brought visibility to a largely overlooked condition but also reinforced our client's commitment to education and empowerment. As we reflect on this impactful collaboration, we look forward to continuing to amplify voices and create meaningful change in the year ahead.

BECMA: The "Black Advocates" That Forgot What Advocacy Means Ladies and gentlemen, let’s talk about BECMA, the self-proclaimed voice for Black economic equity in Massachusetts. You know, the organization that loves to announce partnerships, review diversity practices, and connect pipelines—but somehow missed the part where actual advocacy happens. In 2023, the same Massachusetts Convention Center Authority where they’re now bragging about supplier diversity saw a $1.3 million settlement for racism. Fast forward to 2024, and a Black-led nonprofit gets booted out of an event for being, well… Black. And where was BECMA during all this? Oh, probably too busy drafting their next press release to actually show up. Fake Black Allies, Real Performers BECMA loves to throw around phrases like “inclusive growth” and “economic prosperity,” but let’s be real—it's all for show. They’ve built a brand on buzzwords, not breakthroughs. Claiming to fight for equity while ignoring blatant racism at the heart of Boston’s nonprofit sector? That’s like calling yourself a chef but serving microwave dinners. Meanwhile, Wrigcoll, a Black nonprofit that’s actually doing the work, gets sidelined. Where’s BECMA’s “advocacy” when Black-led organizations are under attack? Oh wait—it’s in Newton and Chestnut Hill, far away from Roxbury and Mattapan, where real struggles are happening. Partnerships That Partner With Problems And now, BECMA is partnering with the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority to review diversity practices? Seriously? The same MCCA where these issues unfolded? That’s like hiring a fox to guard the henhouse. What exactly are you reviewing, BECMA? Your ability to look the other way? Stop the Pipeline of Performative Activism BECMA, it’s time to wake up. Stop building pipelines for empty promises and start delivering for the communities you claim to represent. Your silence in the face of real issues speaks louder than all the mission statements in the world. Because right now, you’re not advocates—you’re impostors. Black advocacy isn’t about claiming the title; it’s about carrying the fight. So, BECMA, here’s your frying pan roast: Get out of the spotlight if you can’t handle the heat. #leadership #technology #entrepreneurship #careers #leadership #education #linkedincommunity #resilience #nevergiveup #strokesurvivor #agility #businessstrategy #BreakingNewsBoston #mentalhealth #wellbeing #author #books #life #travel #marketing #humanresources #careers #google #lifecoach #innovation #management #womenintechnology #usnavy #womeninstem #performance #sales #socialmedia #sustainabledevelopment #businessgrowth #smallbusiness #daybreak8 #Nonprofit #DoGood #Philanthropy #SocialGood #Volunteer #businessowners #YouthEmpowerment #UrbanEntrepreneurship #BostonChangemakers #masswomen #25DaysofChristmas #BECMAmember #BlackTech #BlackCreators #WeBuyBlack #Kwanzaa #SquashHunger

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in the United States were informed of their freedom, a pivotal moment in American history. As we commemorate this significant day, it's an opportunity to reflect on the journey and resilience of Black Americans. Here are three ways you can show support. 🤎 Affirm the emotional reaction of Black people to the holiday and express gratitude for your Black employees' contributions outside of the holiday. 🤎 If not already, make Juneteenth a company holiday, or allow employees optional PTO. 🤎 If you have the day off, consider volunteering or patronizing in Black communities and businesses. . . . #happyjuneteenth #inclusivebehaviors #diversityintheworkplace #workplaceinclusion #equityandinclusion

This is how I imagine many people may look while trying to figure out the best ways to honor Juneteenth and spend their days off. You might be asking yourself questions like: - Can I celebrate Juneteenth? - Should I stay at home? - Should I leave my home? - Should I say anything about the day at all? These are all great questions. Having #IntellectualHumility is essential in creating #SharedHumanity and #InclusiveWorkplaces. That's why I created this condensed list of action items and resources to help you navigate this important U.S. holiday: **Reading is fundamental!** My brother John Graham Jr. is the author of *Plantation Theory: The Black Professional's Struggle Between Freedom and Security*, a book detailing the long-lasting impacts of the Slave Economy on today’s workplaces and society at large. **Engage and advocate for reparations and raise awareness about Reparative Justice!** Reparations refer to compensation for past injustices, typically in the context of large-scale human rights violations or historical injustices. My good friend Erin Corine Johnson has created the The Reparations Race to help folks start this journey! **Learn something new!** I'm joining my friends Dr. Shawna Gann and Christopher Riddick, Ed.D. to offer our FREE annual Juneteenth #LinkedIn live event. This year's event, Juneteenth: Beyond the History, is on Monday, June 17th at 11 AM (CDT). You can also register for my upcoming virtual workshop, Honoring Juneteenth: Seeking Reparative Justice, on Saturday, June 15th from 11 AM (CDT) until 12:30 PM (CDT). Playback is available. **Support Black businesses, creators, and advocates.** One of my favorite thought leaders on this platform is K Mataōtama Strohl (They/Them), who leads conversations on creating psychologically safer environments. One of my favorite clients (and closest friends) is Rebekah Borucki, the founder of Row House Publishing. A publishing house dedicated to amplifying Black voices! **Support Black Joy and Creativity.** Initiatives like Lisa Hurley and The Great Exhale, Crystle Johnson’s Design Your Soft Life, Soulfillment by Dr. Hayley Haywood and #SisKnowYourWorth by Stefani C. help Black women thrive outside of systems of racialized violence and systemic oppression. The legacy of ancestors like Dr. King reminds us to make service the cornerstone of fighting oppression. Hopefully, these resources inspire you to do just that! In the comments below, feel free to share resources to help others celebrate the day. I’d also like to hear from non-Black folks about their plans for next week too! Please feel free to share this post to raise awareness! #Juneteenth2024 #RacialJustice #EquityAndInclusion #BlackExcellence #ReparativeJustice #DiversityMatters #SocialJustice #InclusiveWorkplace

October is a busy month for shouting out about important topics that can impact on employees. With Black History Month and Menopause Awareness Month both starting today, there are plenty of opportunities for organisations to raise awareness of these important subjects and demonstrate that they care for their workforce. We’ll be sharing posts about both throughout October and today we’re focussing on Black History Month, which this year embraces the theme, Reclaiming Narratives. In today’s world, stories are powerful tools that shape how we understand our past, present and future. For too long, the history of Black communities has been told through lenses that often misrepresent, oversimplify or entirely overlook the rich and diverse experiences of those who lived it. Here are a few suggestions about how your workplace can support this: · Host talks and workshops on Black British history · Showcase Black art, music and literature · Boost Black employee networks · Partner with local Black-owned businesses · Review and improve your diversity policies · Feature Black authors in employee book clubs · Fundraise for Black community charities Let's celebrate Black achievements and foster inclusion beyond October. What are your ideas to make this year's Black History Month truly impactful? #BlackHistoryMonth
