Lessons Learned: Why Cultural Fit Matters More Than Experience in Hiring We once made a significant mistake in hiring a retail manager who seemed to tick all the boxes initially. Had vast international experience Came from an international background as an expatriate from Europe Presented well and exuded confidence. However, during the probation period, it became evident that the individual was not the right fit for our team. Neglected team care Consistently unpunctual Made numerous excuses Lacked teamwork skills, and had a bossy attitude. This experience highlighted the importance of looking beyond skills and qualifications when hiring. Agree!! if so, What criteria do you consider when hiring? #HR #Jobseekers #hiring

I’m officially a month into my new role as Head of Talent Acquisition at DOC and I wanted to share some reasons why I made the move and why I’m so happy to be here: 1. DOC is a family first organization. Starting from the top down, the President Joubin Hassanein shared with me in my first interview that for many at the organization, it may be the first time they aren’t expected to be on call nights and weekends. It’s a deliberate culture shift DOC is building in the industry to have more work/ life balance than the rest, and I’ve actually seen it in action in my short time here (and now get to spend more quality time with my daughter :D ) . 2. I get to work with the amazingly talented Celeste Narganes. I formerly reported into Celeste for many years (spanning multiple teams) at HubSpot. When you find a connection that rare and special, you embrace the opportunity to work together again! Celeste is someone who has changed the course of my career more than once, and I’m so excited to be under her leadership again. I feel like I learn something each time I meet with her. How many get to say that about their boss? 3. The bold leadership and vision of our president Joubin Hassanein is nothing short of legendary. He wants to build an organization that listens to it’s people, creates a culture of flexibility, autonomy and growth, and furthers the world with each project that we take on. As a former executive recruiter, I thought to myself in our first interview “wow- he is visionary and cares about his people- that’s a rare combo to find in a seasoned leader at his level.” I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work closely and learn under him; to help co-create an environment at DOC where our employees will thrive now and in the future. 4. Commercial construction is the 2nd fastest growing industry in the world. I just left the first fastest growing industry (tech), and I’m excited to take what I’ve learned to a new space and help develop its people function in an area that needs more innovation! 5. I’m jumping out of my comfort zone. On top of recruiting, I get to try out SO many new things in my role! From Employee Engagement work, to Talent Branding, we’re building from the bottom up, and it’s energizing! 6. The people here are amazing. Kind, considerate, humble, and looking to grow. I truly feel like I found my new “home,” and I’m excited to share it with anyone looking for a new opportunity. Check us out, we’re hiring! https://lnkd.in/d3sskTfU 7. Lastly, im sharing this post to also highlight that switching industries can be scary and uncertain—I had these thoughts myself. But I remember the advice a recruiter tells their candidates and clients; when you make a decision based off of knowledge, research and your gut feeling- you can’t go wrong! Make the leap, check out a new industry or role, you never know what awaits you on the other side. It might just be better than you can imagine 😊 Thanks for reading!
