I really enjoyed this podcast/panel interview about the rise of stackable credentials in higher education. My top takeaways: 1. The Carnegie classifications created in 1970 really need updating (DUH). 2. It was great to hear several university leaders being bullish about their institution's ability to evolve and continue to lead for learners with changing needs. 3. The need for collaboration/partnership between public and private sector providers was a key theme. We've seen some successful collaborations in the non-degree boot camp space and others, and also some real challenges to traditional OPM models -- what will new and innovative partnership models look like? Two areas I would love to hear more about Doug Lederman: 1. How are the accrediting bodies evolving, or planning to evolve? 2. Examples of breaking down the silos between the traditionally-separate continuing education departments and the degree-granting academic departments. What cultural/political/governance attitudes or shifts pave the way for this innovation? (Today's IHE article "Liberal Arts Microcredentials on the Rise" prompted me to wonder).

Minerva Project is a dramatic example of #HigherEd #Innovation from a bold #leader in Ben Nelson The innovation looks beyond making arguments for more state support in a situation where government and public priorities lie elsewhere. It turns instead to private investment as a new venture set up with a different cost base and operating model. And it pursues evidence-informed differentiation in an environment of ubiquitous research-teaching campus-based providers distracted by outdated measures of quality such as in rankings. This is what successful companies do in many sectors undergoing change. The lessons for many global universities as market demand undergoes rapid change are clear and well worth understanding.
No one would send their child to a school where children would be able to read perfectly at the end of first grade, but not remember how to in second grade. Yet, that's how the traditional university model operates, with its cram-test-forget model. Ben Nelson, Founder and CEO of Minerva Project, introduces this startling analogy on the most recent episode of the HEDx podcast, hosted by Martin Betts, and dives deeper into why and how #highereducation needs to be reformed.
