Eric, Rhonda, and the entire Garrett family wholeheartedly embrace the timeless wisdom of the Bible, embodying the principle that "To whom much is given, much will be expected." This foundational belief drives us forward, inspiring meaningful action and service in all that we do. From the very beginning, Matt Griffin's role as the chief operating officer of The Garrett Companies was marked by more than mere professional duty. His partnership with Eric transcended the bounds of typical colleagues, rooted in a deep personal connection and a shared vision for the company's future. As the company thrived, it became increasingly clear that our success was a platform to uplift those in need. The seed of the Garrett Family Foundation was planted during this time of growth, though its realization was hindered by the whirlwind pace of the company's expansion. Tragically, Matt's battle with cancer ended in 2023, leaving behind his wife Emily, their three children, and a company and family deeply mourning his loss. In her darkest moments, Emily found solace in the unwavering support of the Garrett family and its employees. Through this challenging experience, her perspective shifted, igniting a fervent passion for aiding others. When Eric presented Emily with the opportunity to lead the Garrett Family Foundation, it became more than a mere obligation— it became a deeply personal mission to extend compassion and support to those facing similar adversities. At the heart of both the Foundation and The Garrett Companies lies a shared commitment to impactful change. Fueled by ambitious aspirations, we seek to empower and uplift those within our communities. His architecture mirrored the era’s broader push to rethink and redefine established norms, blending creativity with a respect for nature. Today, as we face our own complex challenges—climate change 🌡️, social equity ⚖️, technological advancements free from bias📱—we are called to draw from this legacy of bold thinking. How can we, as public interest leaders, innovate and adapt to build a more equitable and sustainable future? As we look forward to the coming mid-century, let us be inspired by the courage, creativity, and vision of those who came before us. Dennis Jaffe has done it again with an insightful article that highlights painful truths about the succession planning process for successful leaders of family enterprises. It has been a while since Reid Hoffman made this observation. Since then, executives around the nation have been referencing the OODA Loop, including JP Morgan's CEO Jamie Dimon. But still I like that Hoffman said this and get his point: "OODA Loop is observe, Orient, Decide, Act, its fighter pilot terminology and what it means is the faster OODA Loop survives, the other one dies. Individuals and organizations all through the valley talk about their OODA Loop and the speed at which they are moving because they feel speed is critical for there is literally no modern Silicon Valley company that doesn't actually in fact have this kind of speed genetics built into them.
