Ethnocentrism is the tendency to judge other cultures based on one's own cultural standards and beliefs, often resulting in the belief that one's own culture is superior to others. This mindset can lead to prejudice, discrimination, and misunderstanding between different cultural groups. Ethnocentrism can hinder intercultural communication and cooperation, as it closes off opportunities for learning from and appreciating other cultures. It can also contribute to stereotypes and biases against those who are perceived as different. Overcoming ethnocentrism involves developing cultural awareness and open-mindedness towards diverse perspectives. By recognizing and challenging our own ethnocentric tendencies( our critics), we can cultivate respect for all cultures and promote mutual understanding and harmony in a multicultural world. Do you respect other people’s cultures or you criticize them…?

Knowing other cultures does not mean you are culturally intelligent. It's not enough. Learning greetings in a few different languages is not enough. Listing off a bunch of cultural differences is not enough. Understanding surface-level traditions is not enough. Being aware of time zone differences is not enough. Knowing German business etiquette is not enough. Having a few international friends is not enough. Studying abroad for a semester is not enough. Knowing the local cuisine is not enough. Grasping cultural taboos is not enough. Having a diverse team is not enough. These are all great - I'm not knocking any one of these - they are amazing to have... But they are not enough. While understanding various cultures is beneficial, it's just one aspect of cultural intelligence (CQ). Knowledge alone won't suffice. You need to cultivate many more CQ competencies to 'be enough': Knowledge Self-awareness Adaptation Motivation. It’s about a deeper understanding of your own values and emotions, planning for intercultural encounters, and expanding your skills portfolio. So, go beyond surface-level knowledge. Embrace the journey of developing true cultural intelligence. The Beauty of Cultural Diversity in the Workplace! Today, I had the opportunity to speak with a keyword figure of a multinational company based in Brazil Bruno Soares Guazina. During our conversation, we discussed the difficulties and the pleasure of learning a new language. We reflected on how each language represents unique richness, culture, and beauty. It was a wonderful chat that made me appreciate linguistic diversity even more. I appreciated the experience and found it wonderful to interact with different cultures. It helps break down the barriers we often create, emphasizing the importance of cultural diversity in our daily work and making us more open and enriched us with new perspectives. The CQ report you get after taking an assessment shows your cultural values like this. You can see that culturally, I prefer direct, low context communication. This is common for my culture cluster (Anglo, which includes the USA). I often talk about how I struggle with high context communication. I shudder to think about what clues I missed in my life in cross-cultural communication, especially when I lived in South Korea (Confucian Asia cluster). I know I have this cultural blind spot, though I'm able to adapt much better to other cultural values, like Being vs. Doing. What are your cultural blindspots? Where is it hindering your ability to connect across cultures? It is safe to say that Your context dictates your perspective, and your perspective becomes your reality. People with an expansive context tend to have a larger perspective. People with a narrow context have a deeper understanding of the specific context. They both have an advantage and a disadvantage to it. Basically, your experiences and interactions become your context. The other day, I had the enriching experience of visiting my sister at the Kenyan Coast, where she resides within the Mijikenda community, steeped in specific cultural practices. Immersing myself in this vibrant community was eye-opening. I couldn't help but marvel at the richness of their culture and the beautiful flow it created. This is their context and their understanding of it, is rich. However, I also observed a certain resistance among some locals towards embracing outside cultures—a sentiment that's both understandable and acceptable. So this could limit the community to this specific context. This led to insightful conversations with newfound friends, who shed light on why some individuals are hesitant to accept new cultures or even new people. They shared a Swahili proverb, 'mwacha mila mtumwa,' which translates to 'whoever abandons his culture becomes a slave.' It made me realize that interactions with new cultures are not just about what we bring but also about what we learn. Our role as travelers and cultural ambassadors is not to force our ideologies but to engage in mutual learning. While we may perceive ourselves as having a 'better' perspective due to exposure, we must question better for whom? As we traverse different spaces, adopting and sharing customs, it's crucial to do so with awareness. We should consider whether the practices we introduce may have unintended consequences in the long run. This introspection is key to ensuring that our interactions with diverse cultures are respectful and mutually beneficial. My experience has fueled my curiosity to explore more cultures and embrace diverse identities with grace and understanding. It's not about imposing our own culture but understanding why existing practices have endured before offering alternatives. Let's celebrate the beauty of cultural diversity while navigating the delicate balance of cultural exchange responsibly. These are the foundations of meaningful cultural interactions and the essence of enriching both our perspectives and theirs. #traveler #culture #diversity #sustainability
