How to translate AI ethics principles into an RPA implementation? Well, look no further. Ulrich Gnewuch and Dörte Schulte-Derne conducted a longitudinal case study with an energy service provider implementing robotic process automation (RPA). They highlight that digital leaders need to take employees’ needs and concerns seriously, even before the first process is automated using AI. Enjoy reading and sharing! #MISQE #MISQuarterlyExecutive

🎉 Featured in the Harvard Business Review! Proud to see the AI governance platform developed by HPE's Legal department getting the industry recognition it deserves. Feel free to reach out if you'd like to learn more about how we're leveraging automation and AI to advance the way we live and work. === "Beyond enhancing the awareness of the local context, continuous engagement can also help global leadership strike a delicate balance of deferring to local teams in some cases but overruling them in others. HPE approached this problem by building automated processes. When starting a new initiative or bidding process that involves AI, their compliance software automatically schedules a meeting between team personnel and members of the local AI governance group. The local team provides context for the conversation, while the global team provides more high-level expertise on HPE’s principles and AI governance framework. Over time, this has built up a “case law” within HPE of how to approach different AI ethics issues." https://lnkd.in/gKdjFyjN

It's time to move beyond loss aversion to include value creation to justify AI investments... There has been a lot of focus recently on AI ethics and governance, which makes sense as GenAI use cases in insurance are starting to move beyond experimentation into production. Given this, the Notre Dame-IBM Tech Ethics Lab published a great article on this important topic. When it comes to AI ethics and governance, many companies are taking a loss aversion “reactive” approach to justify AI investments that emphasize: ✦ Regulatory compliance ✦ Client trust ✦ Brand reputation protection With AI investment expected to approach $200 billion globally by 2025, with GenAI adding as much as $4.4 trillion annually to the global economy, a shift is occurring from just loss aversion to a balance inclusion with value creation working together to offset investment budgets. The value generation approach involves strengthening intangibles and capabilities for potential competitive differentiation, longer-horizon innovation, and “proactive” justifications that emphasize: ✦ New market opportunities ✦ Building organizational capabilities ✦ Customer satisfaction improvements ✦ Employee productivity improvements ✦ Demonstrate trustworthiness and maturity Rooting an AI implementation strategy in loss aversion and value generation can help insurers recognize that using AI presents a critical opportunity for economic growth. A balanced approach helps to maximize the potential returns on investments while simultaneously benefiting stakeholders, the ecosystem in which they operate, and society as a whole. As #AI, including #genAI becomes more capable, 20th Century sci-fi literature is eerily relevant. Asimov's 3 laws of robots and Clark's "[AI] will start to think and eventually completely outthink their makers," are here. It's time to deeply consider the business ethics and better understand the implications of #ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles in the service of commerce and brand development.

AI risks such as compliance, bias, and transparency are increasingly under scrutiny, with only 21% of executives reporting high maturity in governance practices. A recent report by the IBM Institute for Business Value emphasises that while generative AI offers obvious benefits, it also brings new governance challenges. IBM suggests that key governance priorities include accountability, transparency, and explainability. Notably, with diverse, multidisciplinary governance teams and a commitment to responsible AI frameworks, organisations can harness AI's potential more responsibly. (Link to the full report in the comments section.) I believe boards have a pivotal role in driving AI accountability. They can significantly advance AI governance by: - Endorse ethical AI principles, ensuring that AI policies align with the organisation's core values - Appointing senior leaders responsible for AI governance and mandating AI ethics councils - Boards can advocate for transparency by requiring detailed reporting on AI model decisions, data sources, and system biases - Integrating AI governance with sustainability goals, particularly in low-carbon initiatives

The paper advocates for a comprehensive approach to AI ethics and governance ROI. It encompasses both avoiding costs like regulatory fines and enhancing long-term intangible benefits such as innovation and competitive edge. It stresses that organizations must integrate AI into their strategic frameworks, balancing tactical and strategic uses.
