Some important and positive news from MHCLG. Today it shared plans of further funding for local councils to unlock the potential of brownfield sites - a continuation of the £180m Brownfield Land Release Fund launched in 2022. The environmental remediation and infrastructure improvements that will be permitted by the funding are costly, so it is important for councils to carefully consider how funding is allocated to minimise financial risk and maximise financial sustainability. By addressing these financial considerations, councils will ensure that the redevelopment of brownfield can be financially sustainable, economically viable and contribute to positive regeneration in local communities. #GrantThornton #PublicServicesAdvisory #Regeneration

This is great. But here are 33,758 brownfield sites on the brownfield register. If each site needs a feasibility study, that will cost at least £337 million. If each site still needs planning permission, that will cost us over £1.6 billion. And all that without a spade touching the ground. Blocktype can help reduce this, but whatever we do, we need to make the planning process less costly.

Great news for local development! The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has announced £68 million in funding for 54 councils to unlock the potential of #brownfield land, driving forward much-needed regeneration. This investment aligns perfectly with the vision outlined in the Design for Life report https://lnkd.in/eywyWU8q, where Localis (think tank) and Norse Group emphasize the need for sustainable urban development and regeneration to address the #housing crisis, meet #climate goals, and boost local leadership. In Design for Life, we explore how innovative approaches to #regeneration, such as repurposing brownfield sites, can create thriving communities while prioritising decarbonisation and health. This new funding provides an opportunity for local authorities to take tangible steps towards realising these goals, particularly in alignment with our recommendations for place leadership, financial capability, and integrating climate resilience into urban planning. Take a deeper dive into how strategic, sustainable regeneration can shape the future of our towns and cities by reading the Design for Life report. There’s much to welcome here from @Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. Unlocking disused brownfield sites to build new homes is essential. The £68m funding boost to remediate brownfield sites is a good move, but local authorities must also get more funding to build homes themselves. Our @RIBA report ‘Foundations for the Future’ illustrates an innovative new model to enable local authorities to build on publicly owned land, such as brownfield. This model, based on a one-off initial investment from central government to local authorities, is used to build homes for both social rent and market sale on land which is free at the point of use, . It will take creative solutions like this to tackle the housing crisis head-on. Architects’ involvement is key to ensure that new homes are high-quality and sustainable. In an article with The Daily Reporter, Baker Tilly’s Kaitlin Konyn discusses the impact of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024, which extends the deadline for Public Housing Authorities (PHAs) to apply for the Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD) program to September 30, 2029. This extension gives PHAs additional time to convert public housing into Section 8 rental assistance and simplifies the RAD/Section 18 blend process.
