A new study found that COVID harmed the cognitive skills of students and teachers. Greg Toppo explores how children’s brains began demonstrating weaker memory and “flexible thinking” skills as the pandemic changed schooling in The74. https://lnkd.in/etrV-B_4 #EducationResearch #CognitiveSkills #RemoteLearning #PandemicImpact #StudentWellbeing #LearningLoss #MentalHealthMatters

From rising costs to increasing mental health challenges, university students face a variety of external factors that can hinder their student experience. To prepare students for these issues, education providers need to demonstrate the purpose the help students find, the support available to them, and the ways education are investing in new solutions, ideas, and values. #studentexperience #mentalhealth #AI

Excited to share a project close to my heart: over the last few years, our team at Dartmouth College has been on a remarkable journey, tracking the lives of over 200 undergraduates for the entirety of their college experience, from 2017 to 2022. This isn’t just any study; it’s the longest-running mobile sensing project of its kind. We dived into everything—how students move around campus, their sleep, social habits, and even how they felt through surveys and brain scans, especially during the ups and downs of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our aim? To truly grasp how students' mental health and behaviors evolve over their college years. Why does this matter? Understanding these patterns can help universities better support their students, creating a healthier, more productive environment for everyone. We’re now opening this dataset to the world, hoping it sparks more research and conversations on student support. We’ll be presenting our findings at the ACM UbiComp conference in Melbourne this October. For those interested in the nitty-gritty details or looking to explore the dataset, please visit this link: https://lnkd.in/eCfrxecy #StudentLife #MentalHealth #DartmouthStudy #HigherEd

Postsecondary education continues to be one of the most effective vehicles to improve socioeconomic standing and quality of life. But gaps in achievement and opportunity for underrepresented groups continue to persist. In our latest research brief authored by Omid Fotuhi, we identify the role that psychological barriers play in undermining performance and persistence, especially among those from underrepresented groups. At the same time, research has shown promise for psychological interventions that offer more adaptive attributions in the face of common challenges and setbacks. Tailored, targeted, and timely psychological interventions can significantly improve performance and well-being. However, it is critical to avoid the temptation to believe that any solution is a one-size-fits-all approach to student success. Implementing a continuous, iterative cycle of assessment and intervention will keep the interventions updated and relevant for the target population. https://lnkd.in/g4tnW7Dt #highereducation #psychologicalintervention #studentperformance

Dr. Carolina Kuepper-Tetzel, our Applied Cognition in Learning and Teaching theme lead has been accepted to present at this year's Psychonomic Society Annual Meeting on her latest project "Engagement with Effective Learning Strategies in Students with Test Anxiety". Check out the abstract below and follow Carolina for all things science of learning.
Looking forward to presenting brand-new data and research at this year's Psychonomic Society Annual Meeting in New York City on Friday, 22 Nov 2024, Session Poster Session II (12:00 PM-1:30 PM). Engagement with Effective Learning Strategies in Students with Test Anxiety (Carolina E. Kuepper-Tetzel, Grace Callaghan, & Vendula Opluštilová) Abstract: Test anxiety is common among students with an estimated prevalence of 20-40% and is associated with impaired learning and academic achievement. While test anxiety is a multi-faceted construct, theoretical explanations (e.g., the skills deficit model) have emphasized the contributing role of poor study skills to the development and maintenance of test anxiety. Using a mixed-methods approach, we investigated the relationship between students’ engagement with effective learning strategies (specifically spaced and retrieval practice) and test anxiety. In Study 1, we surveyed N=166 students and revealed that neither engagement with spaced practice nor retrieval practice significantly predicted levels of test anxiety in students. In Study 2, we asked N=136 participants in open-ended questions about their views on implementing spaced and retrieval practice in relation to test anxiety. Through thematic analysis, we identified implementation success, time management, and previous experiences as main themes for the uptake of effective learning strategies. Our findings have implications for developing ways to promote effective study strategies among students with test anxiety. #testanxiety #learning #education
