What is often unspoken about Memorial Day is its origins in the quest for civil rights and the search for peace. According to the Office of Veterans Affairs, it originated after a series of “Decoration Days” were organized by Black and White communities to honor fallen soldiers following the Civil War. One of the most significant of these events was held by a group of Black and White abolitionists in May 1865. In 1868, General John A. Logan, the head of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), a politically powerful organization of Union veterans, made it an official act, speaking of the practice of floral tributes and “Decoration Days” in the context of post-war Black civil rights. It was not until after WW1 that Memorial Day began to expand to honor the dead from all American wars. As we take time today to celebrate the lives of those fallen soldiers who have served this country, let us also remember that the origin of Memorial Day is rooted in the struggle to end slavery and the search for “permanent peace.
