At VineWorks, we know that vineyard trellis posts are crucial for the strength, longevity, and durability of your trellising system. With various options available, how do you choose the best post for your vineyard? 🤔 Here’s a quick guide: 🔸 Hot-Dipped Galvanised Posts 👉 Premium quality with a protective zinc layer for longer-lasting performance. No exposed edges or holes! Perfect for maximum durability. 🔸 Pre-Galvanised Posts 👉 The standard option, still great but with some potential risk for corrosion due to exposed edges. Great if you’re budget-conscious. Other factors to consider: 🌱 Soil type & wind exposure - Rockier soils or windy areas may require shorter or anchored posts. 🌿 Powder-coating options - Blend with your surroundings by opting for natural browns and greens. 💡 Installation - Make sure you're installing the right way to avoid damaging your posts! Remember, your trellis post choice will impact your vineyard’s performance for years to come. Choose wisely. Want more advice? Vineyard Update: A day late with this update, I know. Installing the netting was a separate and longer task than the annual raising and lowering of the nets. It helped that we had 5 very capable men (they were my sons and their military friends) helping me. It took about 6 hours to install the nets on a little over 1/2 acre. The netting comes on rolls that weighed about 50 lbs each and had 1000ft of netting per roll. These are 48 inch nets but you can get them between 32-60 inch heights. I built a wooden frame in the bed of the Gator and used a metal rod to slip through the center of the net roll to spool it out…kinda like a toilet paper dispenser on a grand scale. When you install the net you use the red “C clips” to close the base of the net around the trunks and the posts. Lowering the nets happens the day of harvest. The harvest crew, 4-6 experienced vineyard workers, can lower the nets in 30 minutes, then begin harvest. They don’t put the ties on it, they just let it down. It takes me about a 1/2 day to go back through to bundle and tie the netting to the trucks and posts about 18 inches off the ground. That is one of my least favorite tasks as it requires bending over or getting down on a knee to install each tie. I didn’t mention that when I raise the nets I also remove the grape bunches at the top of the canopy that we don’t want the vine to grow (see previous posts). This adds time to the net raising task. We have some exciting news to share with you next update. Yes, this is a teaser….sorry if you hate suspense. #knowyourwine #virginiavineyards #virginiawine #vidalblanc Toni Stinson Josh Stinson

This is what can happen in a vineyard when a grower decides to change varieties. The choice for grafting over can be due to poor performance (a red flag) or market value of the variety planted. Anyway, the safest way to graft over a vineyard block is to test the incoming budwood as well as what is in the vineyard. In this case, either the budwood or vineyard vines were infected with a pathogenic strain of Agrobacterium vitis. Gall symptoms generally do no display unless stress is present (grafting is considered stressful to a vine!). The work of grafting over a vineyard block is time consuming and expensive. Why not spend the extra money to do it right?

One of the biggest vineyard costs is winter pruning, and for a long time cane pruning has been the favoured pruning method for Sauvignon Blanc in Marlborough. Increasing labour and production costs have created a need to explore alternative production systems. Long spur pruning has the potential to deliver similar yield and quality, while reducing winter labour inputs and enabling more mechanisation than cane pruning. BRI has been running a three-year trial with growers to gather objective data on the effectiveness of long spur pruning in Marlborough vineyards. We want to provide growers with practical knowledge to inform their decision-making on the vineyard. #nzwine #pruning

A frequent topic of discussion I encounter revolves around the concept of being a craft 🥦 grower. It's a complex topic, particularly given the very few true craft growers in Canada. I hold maximum respect for those dedicated craft warriors who truly embody the craft ethos. On the other hand, there exists another group of growers, whom I refer to as "Craft-ish" growers. These individuals partially adopt elements of the full craft experience but ultimately fall short of meeting the criteria for certified craft status. It's crucial to understand that being a craft grower encompasses more than just yielding dense buds and tight nugs. This distinction often causes confusion among 🥦 consumers. . . . . . #KR #craftgrowers #kronicrelief #legacytolegal

Fantastic to see the outcomes of this trial. I am very much in favour of spur pruning and have been exploring and developing different strategies to implementing and improving yields with Pinot Noir in grown in England since 2016, and have now started a trial on Chardonnay (2021). The issue I have seen is with bud fertility due to England been a cool climate region and reduced sunlight hours. To counter this a rigorous canopy management of shoot thinning and leaf removal is need. However the ripeness levels are more homogeneous and cane size and growth rate more even across the vine. Need more research projects to show the advantages of this pruning method and which varieties can best work with this method.
