This week, we are hosting Jim Carroll to discuss Navigating Indoor Air Quality Challenges While saving energy Will you join us this Wednesday, Nov 6th, at 12 pm EST? We will explore the intersection of indoor air quality (IAQ) and green home building. While the green building movement is delivering on sustainability and energy efficiency, it often overlooks a critical component: the health of the home's occupants. Many green building initiatives inadvertently compromise IAQ, leading to environmentally friendly homes that are not necessarily healthy. Building codes need to catch up to modern technology. The idea that a home's square footage and number of bedrooms plus one somehow leads to proper ventilation to ensure breathable air needs to be updated, especially when modern software algorithms can instantly ascertain the Goldilocks scenario as to when and for how long fresh air rates are required. Sustainable home ideas, part 5 - solar panels. (You knew this would be on my list!) We've been living with solar panels for just under a week now. (Finally! This has been on my bucket list for a while.) It's interesting to see the habits we are adjusting to capitalize on the direct solar power. For example, running the dishwasher (on eco cycle of course) during the day - now free - versus taking advantage of middle of the night lower prices. Solar panels and systems come with apps. Apps mean data. And I'm wondering if that data will change my habits all for the better? Or will some bad habits creep in? For example, I'm now tempted to use the clothes dryer more (during the day, of course) vs hanging out clothes to dry naturally. Is this good? Bad? Neutral/ no impact? In my defense, even though I live in a sunny environment, we live by the sea, which equals humidity. There have been many times where I go to retrieve clothes hanging outside after the sun sets, and they feel... not totally dry. They still need a 20 minute shot in the dryer to get rid of the last bits of moisture. But does solar mean I can use the dryer guilt free whenever I want during prime solar power hours? Or any other electrical appliance for that matter? I'm not sure yet. If you have the opportunity, please do consider solar. I know it's not accessible to all (renting vs owning a home, for example, throws up barriers).
