With my final semester at the University of Florida coming to an end, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on my experience in PUR3211: Diverse Voices in Public Relations instructed by Dr. Ajia Meux. This course focused on the role that diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) play in the field of public relations. This course taught me about the importance of DEI everywhere, especially how it impacts individuals and companies as a whole. This semester, I was able to participate in weekly discussion posts, where I was able to hear about the perspective of my peers on different aspects on DEI, like morality, social media and public statements. I also played a role in conducting a team study with my peers on Costco, where we analyzed their current DEI efforts and created a SWOT analysis for the past, present and future of the company as a whole. What if it was about more than just college-aged students and higher-ed enrollments? In 2018, Nathan D. Grawe published his excellent book Demographics and the Demand for Higher Education. If you are in higher education, you know all about the book and the looming enrollment cliff which he aptly forecast. That much discussed enrollment cliff is about far deeper issues than just the number of 18 year olds on campus. Our new research--released today--outlines the post baby boomer labor market and the challenges our society faces in light of it. In order for institutions to train the students they do have to reach their career aspirations, leaders on campus need to understand that the labor market they are graduating students into is not the one they themselves entered.
