In 2021, Coldplay announced a 12-point plan to cut the carbon footprint of touring by 50%. Now, they've given an update on their progress, saying the first two years of their Music of the Spheres tour saw a 59% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared with their previous world tour. They have used things like a dancefloor that generates electricity when fans jump up and down, and have cut down on air travel. They have also revealed that seven million saplings have been planted as part of a commitment to grow a tree for every fan attending the shows. New figures suggest, external the tour has become more efficient as it progresses. Among the developments, 72% of tour waste was diverted from landfill and sent for reuse, recycling and composting - up from 66% in 2023. They said the figures had been assessed and verified by the environmental solutions initiative at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). ##renewableenergy #environment #sustainability #climatechange #education #nature #reuse #reduce https://lnkd.in/ebvsZU9R

This weekend, I had an unforgettable experience at a Coldplay concert, not just because of their incredible performance, but for their sustainability commitment as well! 🌍 Here's what I saw that truly impressed me: 1. The concert featured two small stages with piezoelectric tiles, encouraging fans to generate electricity at the stadium for the next event. There were also stationary bikes in the stadium for the same purpose. 2. Multiple reminders to recycle wristbands were displayed on screens throughout the stadium, emphasizing the importance of sustainability. 3. The show kicked off with a short video highlighting their sustainability efforts and how concert tickets contribute to various green initiatives. 4. Coldplay has donated to or partnered with incredible organizations like The Ocean Cleanup and Sustainable Food Trust, among many others, which were promoted during the previously mentioned video. 5. Their app allows fans to calculate the carbon offset of their transportation to the concert, acknowledging sustainable choices, and encouraging better practices. 6. They have committed to reducing their CO2 emissions by 50% compared to their last tour, using renewable energy sources, and ensuring all tour merchandise is sustainably produced. Lastly, they invited This Is Our Home to perform with them on the 2nd show in Lyon to promote their cause. This Is Our Home is a band from New Zealand which got together to sing for Climate Justice with Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative. It's not everyday that we see a band utilize their resources and go out of their way to advocate for climate change this way, and this all the more is a reason for the band to hold a special place in our hearts. 🌿 It goes to show that sustainable alternatives/choices are possible if one sets their mind to it. #Coldplay #SustainableConcert

Happy Friday everyone, Here is some light and positive content to finish the week on a good note! Coldplay is reporting a 59% reduction in CO2 emissions on their tour following a pledge they made in 2021. It's a great example of breaking down emission sources and finding solutions and or alternatives. While concerts may not be primary contributors to climate change, the fact remains that ALL industries need to reach net zero. With that in mind it's wonderful to see this kind of initiative. You can find more information in the link below but I'll list a few key points that made this possible "-Solar-powered The Ocean Cleanup River Interceptors deployed 86% = average return and re-use rate of LED wristbands -18 shows powered entirely using the tourable battery system in 2023 (made from recycled BMW i3 batteries) -23 partnerships with green travel providersto help fans travel to shows via super-low carbon transport" Cheers, #happyfriday #happyfridayeveryone #sustainability #sustainablesolutions #coldplay

Sustainability never sounded better than this. As Coldplay embarks on new shows of their ‘Music of the Spheres’ world tour across Europe, Australia and New Zealand, they’re not just hitting the right notes with their music but also with their commitment to #sustainability. The band has just recently released a statement, announcing that direct CO2e emissions (from show production, freight, band and crew travel) from the first two years of this tour are 59% less than its previous stadium tours, on a show-by-show comparison. These figures have been verified by the MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative, and are based on actual emissions reductions without factoring in any carbon offsetting or carbon credits. This reduction has been made possible thanks to a systemic approach that includes dozens of partnerships with travel providers to help fans reach the tour venues via super-low carbon transport, savings of over 3,000 tCO2e achieved by purchasing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for flights, plus energy accumulation via in-venue solar installations, and even creative solutions such as kinetic dance floors to power the band’s C-stage performance each night. Emissions from freight and transportation have minimized through packing efficiency, the use of advanced biofuels on sea and air, and electric vehicles on land; additionally, 72% of all tour waste has been diverted from landfill and sent for reuse, recycling and composting. Last, but not least, 10% of all the revenues generated with the shows across touring, records, and publishing will be donated to socially and environmentally led projects and organizations such as Client Earth, The Ocean Cleanup, Global Citizen, and many more. That’s otherworldly. Learn more at: https://lnkd.in/eb83BVPG Follow Otherworldly for more news at the intersection of creativity and sustainability. #coldplay #music #impact

A few months ago, I attended my first Coldplay concert in Munich and was amazed by their commitment to sustainability. Here are some fascinating facts about their eco-friendly approach: 1. Purposeful Tickets: Every ticket sold supports various environmental and social causes. Some of the specific initiatives they support include: - Reforestation projects - Ocean cleanup efforts - Development of carbon capture technologies - Support for renewable energy projects in developing countries 2. Kinetic Energy: The concert was partially powered by kinetic energy generated from dancing fans and stationary bikes. Their innovative dance floors can generate up to 150 watts of electricity per person. 3. Transparency and Goals: Coldplay aims to cut CO2 emissions by 50% compared to their last tour. They've already planted over 5 million trees—one for every ticket sold on their previous tour. 4. Renewable Energy: The band uses solar panels and renewable energy sources wherever possible to power their shows. 5. Sustainable Materials: They prioritize the use of biodegradable confetti and sustainable merchandise options. Interestingly, Coldplay had previously announced their retirement from touring due to environmental concerns. However, they later decided to continue performing while implementing these eco-friendly measures. It’s right to say that now Coldplay is killing it with their eco-friendly concerts, and it really made me reflect on how much our generation values giving back to society. Whether directly or indirectly, we love doing our part to sustain the planet. Which of the above approaches seems interesting to you? #coldplay #sustainability

Without downplaying the good causes that Coldplay seem to be funding, a few things seem like problems here: - The metrics provided on their site are packed with carefully worded caveats, and most tend to be relative or proportionate rather than absolute - No raw data, full methodology or any other type of disclosure is provided For example: "Over 3,000 tCO2e saved by purchasing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for flights" -> relative to what? Which fuels? Where were they sourced? "17kWh average power per show generated via in-venue solar installations, kinetic dance floors and power bikes - enough to power the band’s C-stage performance each night" --> Honestly, cool! But there really isn't any reason to leave out the baselines here: how much power does a Coldplay concert require? On what grids? Are they helping to integrate and incentivise clean power in other ways? I don't want to trash these efforts but truly, the careful lack of disclosure makes it very hard to strongly support them, and impossible to contextualise them. https://lnkd.in/gJeZzmzS
