The Valiant Shield 2024 exercise in the Pacific involved two U.S. aircraft carrier strike groups - the USS Ronald Reagan and USS Theodore Roosevelt. The exercise focused on integration and interoperability between U.S. and allied forces, with participation from Japan, France, and Canada. In the Philippine Sea, the Reagan strike group conducted a formation sailing event with Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force ships, including the helicopter destroyer JS Izumo and submarine JS Jingei. U.S. and Japanese fighter jets also conducted a flyover as part of the exercise. Separately in the South China Sea, the Theodore Roosevelt strike group conducted a transit alongside French and Canadian frigates. This was in support of the broader Valiant Shield 2024 drills. Notably, during this time, a Dutch Navy frigate conducting sanctions enforcement patrols against North Korea in the East China Sea was harassed by Chinese warplanes, creating a potentially unsafe situation. This highlights the ongoing tensions in the region. The multinational Valiant Shield exercise demonstrates the U.S. military's commitment to strengthening partnerships and interoperability with allies in the Indo-Pacific amid rising strategic competition. #USNavy #CarrierStrikeGroup #MultidomainOperations #IndoPacific #NavalExercise #MarineDefense #Alliances

China is conducting live-fire drills off the coast of Fujian province, facing Taiwan. These drills follow a significant air-and-sea exercise labeled by Beijing as a punishment for Taiwan's president, who has rejected China's claims of sovereignty. The live-fire activities were scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. near the Pingtan islands, with warnings issued to ships to avoid the area. Taiwan's Defense Ministry views these drills as part of China's annual military exercises and is monitoring the situation closely. The ministry suggests that these actions may reinforce China's deterrent strategy amid changing dynamics in the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan, which sees itself as self-governing, remains at odds with Beijing's claims, contributing to heightened tensions. China has increased its military presence around Taiwan, frequently deploying warplanes and naval vessels for exercises. The previous week recorded a significant Chinese military presence, with Taiwan reporting 153 aircraft and numerous naval ships. Meanwhile, the United States continues its freedom of navigation operations in the Taiwan Strait, recently involving the destroyer USS Higgins and the Canadian frigate HMCS Vancouver, while Germany has also enhanced its defense presence in the Asia-Pacific region. #AsiaRisk #GeopoliticalConflictandDisputes #Taiwan Get a full accounting of the security situation in Asia by subscribing to Security Asia. China’s military – bringing together modernisation and escalating aggression #bne #bneEditorsPicks #China In recent years, the PRC has escalated both maritime and aerial incursions into Taiwan's territory, including detaining a Taiwanese fishing boat, conducting patrols that crossed the Taiwan Strait's median line, and increasing harassment around Kinmen. More recently, following Taiwan’s National Day on October 10, Chinese air and naval forces surrounded Taiwan in Beijing’s most aggressive show of force to date. These actions build on a surge in air sorties violating Taiwan’s Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ), which rose from 972 in 2021 to 3,119 in 2022, and continued climbing through 2024.
