Bridging the Public Trust Deficit in AI Recent surveys from Edelman highlight a growing public trust deficit in AI technology. This concern is mirrored in our own research, conducted with Oguz A. Acar, Caroline Wiertz, and Aneesh Banerjee. Our working paper, drawing from three extensive discrete choice experiments with 3268 UK consumers, sheds light on the decision-making processes surrounding financial AI products. The findings are clear: privacy and auditability stand out as the paramount attributes, overwhelmingly preferred over personalization, autonomy, and understandability, even when price and performance factors are controlled. Further, our simulations reveal significant implications: AI-based pension planning apps incorporating responsible attributes such as enhanced privacy and auditability witnessed a dramatic increase in adoption rates — 63.19% for apps with these attributes, compared to only 2.4% without, all else being constant. Similarly, in investment advisory apps, prioritizing user privacy significantly boosts consumer adoption by 27.5%. Per Axio report, 62% of Americans are concerned about AI. As product leaders, designing explainable AI-based experiences will be key to establishing trust in the new products we ship to our consumers. When we buy our food we have the right to look at the ingredients and where the food is made. Let's ship similar AI experiences to our customers where we show them : 1- What data are we using (public, private, etc.) 2- How these models can be used, and their expected outcomes 3- When these models should not be used, and their shortcomings 4- Who should not access these experiences ( kids, people with anxiety,y etc.)

The discussion at our select event ‘AI – Beyond the Hype’ was far more contemporary than the surroundings at City bastion the Don, site of a port merchants established in 1780. Koko Visser, Valcon’s Global Head of AI, was there to talk about real world use cases of AI, how to understand the return on investment and point out some of the most common pitfalls to avoid. The questions flowed from attendees representing financial services companies, government organisations and retail conglomerates, who asked about AI governance, AI literacy and data challenges. Some of the themes that emerged included: AI solutions only being as good as the data they run off and how trustworthy that data is; how organisations can approach AI governance; and technical model challenges, including privacy, explainability and bias. ‘AI - Beyond the Hype’ is the first in a series of AI events that Valcon will host, a forum for AI best practice, knowledge generation and ideas sharing. From the forums, Valcon will produce a series of practical guides on how to approach and overcome specific AI challenges within organisations.
