Amazing insight with leaders who are doing the work: John Chapman, President & CEO of San Antonio Regional Hospital, George Greene President & CEO of Hospital Association of Southern California and Dr. Kevin Parkes, President of Mountain View Physicians Medical Group. These leaders are tireless advocates for healthcare and stakeholders in California.
Their unwavering dedication to collaboration, unity and serving every patient with dignity and compassion is inspiring!
What I learned and what EVERY Californian should know:
1. California hospitals Have lost $25.3 billion since the pandemic.
2. 49% of hospitals in California operate in the "red" forcing 1 in 5 hospitals to cut services such as maternity units, emergency department services and in many cases closing altogether.
3. California has the lowest Medical / Medicaid reimbursement rates in the nation which is why prop 35 is on the ballot.
4. Hospitals are working with policy makers to defer seismic requirements from 2025 to 2030 (voted in favor of, unanimously by the Assembly and the Senate but vetoed).
5. Prop 43's expanding conservatorship laws over those experiencing homelessness and substance abuse disorders under 5150 policies, has the capacity to transform emergency departments into makeshift behavioral health centers. There are no defined or established pathways, or infrastructure to serve these communities, impacting already overstretched emergency departments.
