As an architecture buff, I’ve visited countless impressive buildings over the years, but very few that ‘resonate’ – that is, buildings that have a special something that can be sensed rather than seen.  Brunelleschi’s Basilica di Santo Spirito, which Munira and I stumbled upon recently, is the architectural equivalent of a wonderful Christmas present delivered in a brown paper bag (Brunelleschi’s façade was never implemented), which is why it is probably the most unexpected of the few that have resonated. Inside, it’s far from the tallest, widest, most complex, colourful, or ornate church around, but it has an arresting quality that comes from a rigorous attention to proportion and composition. Architecture is never perfect, but, hey, faultless is a noble ambition. San Spirito has reinforced my belief that ‘proportion’, seemingly ignored or misunderstood by most building designers today, is essential to elevating mere buildings into the realm of architecture.

Excited to Announce Our New Publication! Our article, The Mosque of the Blessed Tree in Safawi, Jordan, co-authored with Architect maher abusamra, has been published in the Journal of Traditional Building, Architecture, and Urbanism. Design Methodology Highlights The mosque’s architectural style emphasizes simplicity and harmony with nature, using traditional load-bearing elements with minimal ornamentation. Key design features include: • A rectangular layout oriented toward the qiblah, aligning with the Blessed Tree. • Three prayer halls: • The main hall, featuring a striking 9-meter-high dome and accessed via a vaulted entrance. • Two secondary halls, one with a dedicated entrance for women, covered with shallow domes supported by pendentives. • Structural vaulting, with Islamic 3/5 pointed arches, creating a buffer zone between the main and secondary halls for load transfer and architectural stability. We’re thrilled to share this contribution to the field of traditional architecture and look forward to continuing the conversation on design, heritage, and innovation.
