Why walk? Why parade around the mall? My friends asked me these questions when they saw my HAPPY WALK posts last March, and after reading, I tried to collect the right answers myself. So why do we have to have drumbeaters, students, and a support group walking alongside the families of children and people with Down syndrome? The simplest answers were “to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day” and to promote our mall a more inclusive mall for mall. But more than the celebration and the promotion, I believe it’s all about COMMITMENT. It starts with welcoming and catering to this group of “Natatanging Nilalangs” and ensuring that everyone feels valued, respected, and can access the facilities and services provided. Which then leads us to training mall management, staff, even tenants, and preparing them to actively foster a sense of support and belonging for these individuals. And finally, opening our doors to all customers and making our malls a safe space so everyone may enjoy equal opportunities and rights to celebrate life and fulfill our mission. Reflecting on March 24 and the backing provided by management, alongside the support from all, including employees and partners, it is no longer solely about the act of walking, but rather the significance of US walking alongside them that truly matters. It transcends mere parading; it is the shared smiles, dances and laughters with individuals with Down syndrome that reinforce our dedication, as we strive for a future where the community is inclusive for all. #AllForDown #SMCares #SupportingCommunities SM Cares Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines, Inc.
