Just finished my first week at Meta x MLH! I've decided to document my journey throughout the fellowship because I had a lot of DMs asking what it's like, so I'll share it with all of you. First, we learned a lot about the responsibilities of a Production Engineer (also known as a Site Reliability Engineer) and even read about how Product Engineers scaled Facebook Live for New Year's. We also covered writing proper documentation, code reviews, and pairing. I had a 1-on-1 with my pod members, and it was exciting to see members from different backgrounds and experiences, including fellow members in ColorStack! Currently, we're tasked with building a simple web app using Flask and Python. Throughout the course, we'll continuously improve it by adding containers, Bash scripting, testing, monitoring, etc. Our pod had the privilege of meeting two Meta Production Engineers, Jacqueline Jiang and Adhip Gupta. They shared exciting insights on being a production engineer at Meta, the different languages and frameworks they use, and stories about their time at Meta. They also encouraged us to have 1-on-1 talks with them, and I certainly have a lot of questions to ask! 😅 Finally, this fellowship is no joke 😭. You have to dedicate time to not get left behind. Week 5 at Meta x MLH: A Week of Insights and Inspiration 🚀 This week was amazing! I had a 1-on-1 with my Meta Mentor, Adhip Gupta. It was very cool to hear about how he started programming at a young age, which inspired him to achieve a master's in Computer Science and become a Production Engineer at Meta. He even led the disaster recovery team during the Meta October 4 outage and took critical actions to recover the system. We also had a Technical Interview Panel with Meta production engineers & recruiters! 🎤 This session aimed to demystify the recruiting and technical interview process, providing invaluable insights for aspiring engineers. Here are some key takeaways 🔑 : Resume Importance: 📄 Your resume is crucial. Highlight relevant coursework and projects to show your expertise in computer science and related technologies. Objective Evaluations: ⚖️ Evaluations are designed to be as unbiased as possible. Referrals are helpful, but everyone’s resume is treated equally. Leadership Examples: 🏅 Demonstrate leadership experiences, like leading a chapter or organizing events, on your resume. PE Intern Requirements: 📚 Basic knowledge of Linux is essential. The interview process includes a technical round and a systems round. Internship Evaluation: 📝 Treat your 12-week internship like an extended interview. Your performance is constantly evaluated to determine future opportunities. Some people may already know this, but I'm on Reddit a lot, with my real name and photo, answering questions and providing commentary about software engineering, bootcamps, technical interviews, and Formation. I do this for the same reason I'm building Formation — to help software engineers navigate their careers. Meta is a huge topic in both Reddit communities and within our Fellowship right now. As hiring is opening back up, and Meta ramping up interviews, many software engineers are finding themselves getting traction at a very desirable company in an otherwise difficult market. In Formation alone, we have around 30 people in active Meta loops. With my experience at Meta (and the experience of Daniel Tomko and Eun Ji An), we're hosting a panel discussion exclusively for Formation Fellows to help them navigate their upcoming loops, decipher what the interviewers are looking for, and give genuine advice, from the perspective of someone who's been on the other side of those interviews - both conducting them and training others to conduct them. I'm excited to be able to share this advice live and answer people's questions interactively. I'm grateful to be able to help engineers navigate their careers, especially in times like this. I'm excited to share my interview experience for the SWE role at Meta, where I had the opportunity to dive into a series of challenging problems across multiple rounds. 💻 Round 1 - Coding (DSA): The first round was focused on data structures and algorithms, where I solved problems on topics like arrays, sorting, and searching. It required efficient time and space complexity solutions. 💻 Round 2 - Coding (DSA): Another deep dive into DSA, this round focused on tackling problems involving 2D arrays and string manipulation. The challenges required efficient handling of multi-dimensional data and complex string operations, which further reinforced my problem-solving skills and ability to optimize solutions. 💻 Round 3 - Coding (DSA): A final coding round with more complex problems, including working with binary trees and dynamic programming. This round tested my ability to think critically and optimize solutions under time constraints. 🛠️ Round 4 - System Design: This round shifted to system design, where I had to design scalable and robust systems. We discussed large-scale architecture, database design, and the trade-offs involved in building real-world systems. 🛠️ Round 5 - System Design: Another system design round, this time with a focus on handling large-scale distributed systems, optimizing performance, and ensuring fault tolerance. It required me to think about reliability, scalability, and maintainability in a dynamic environment. 🤝 Round 6 - Behavioral Interview: The final round was behavioral, where I had the opportunity to discuss my experiences, collaboration in teams, and how I approach challenges and feedback, all in the STAR format. Meta places a strong emphasis on culture, so this round was crucial to demonstrating my alignment with their values. Each round was a learning experience and helped sharpen both my technical and interpersonal skills. Week 6: Docker 🐳 & Meta Intern Interview Tips 👀 As we wrap up Week 6, we've been diving deep into Docker, understanding its core principles and practical applications. I was privileged to attend a Technical Interview Best Practices workshop, where I gained valuable insights from seasoned Meta Production Engineers. Meet Our Speakers: Andrew Ryan and Peter Knowles have a combined 31 years of experience at Meta. They shared invaluable tips and tricks on how to approach technical interviews. 💼🧠 Workshop Highlights 💡: Before You Start Coding: 📋 Clarify interview details (e.g., number of questions, time allotted). 🔍 Read the question carefully and summarize it to the interviewer to confirm understanding. ❓ Ask any necessary clarifying questions. 🗣️ Discuss your solution approach before coding and confirm it with the interviewer. While Coding: 💬 Explain your solution and reasoning as you write. 🛠️ Review for any syntax errors or bugs. 🧮 Evaluate the Time and Space Complexity. As you know, the job of a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) is to ensure site/service reliability (minimizing downtime). Ironically, my site is currently down due to high CPU usage (%99.7) on certain commands😅.
