When somebody asks me what I do as a Mechanical Engineer, I always have a hard time narrowing it down to just one thing. I remember doing an interview at Apple, and the hiring manager explained to me what mechanical engineering is to them using a simple chair as an example. It’s amazing how much goes into something that seems so simple! Designing a chair involves a multitude of considerations: - Tolerance Stack-Up: Ensuring every part fits together perfectly, accounting for slight variations in manufacturing. - Weight Capacity: Making sure the chair can support various weights without compromising its integrity. - Safety: Ensuring the chair doesn't tip over easily and can withstand everyday use. - Comfortability: Designing the chair to be ergonomic, providing adequate support for the user. - Cost: Balancing material and manufacturing costs to create an affordable product without sacrificing quality. - Material Selection: Choosing the right materials that provide the necessary strength, durability, and aesthetics. This involves understanding the mechanical properties and behavior of various materials under different conditions. - Manufacturability: Designing the chair in a way that it can be easily and efficiently manufactured. This includes considering the capabilities and limitations of different manufacturing processes. - Aesthetics: Ensuring the chair looks appealing and fits within the intended design style or brand identity. - Sustainability: Selecting materials and processes that are environmentally friendly and considering the product’s lifecycle, from production to disposal. - User Experience: Testing prototypes with real users to gather feedback and make necessary adjustments to improve the overall experience. Every aspect of mechanical engineering requires meticulous planning, testing, and iteration. It’s a process that involves a deep understanding of materials, manufacturing techniques, and user needs. From initial sketches and CAD models to prototyping and final production, each step is critical to the success of the final product. Mechanical engineering, in essence, is about being able to critically think and learn from every experience. No engineer knows everything, but through continuous learning and adaptation, we strive to make each product the best it can be. Does anyone else find it difficult to explain their role in a single sentence? #MechanicalEngineering #Engineering #ProductDesign #Manufacturing #MaterialScience #Sustainability #UserExperience #Innovation #EngineeringLife #DesignEngineering

Let's be honest - engineers have a reputation for viewing our design counterparts as creative daydreamers more focused on form than function. Conversely, designers have pigeon-holed engineers as rigid, uncreative types dead-set on raining on their parades. But if my time working alongside top-notch design and engineering talent at M3 has taught me anything, it's that we've both got it wrong. While our perspectives may differ, that creative tension is exactly what leads to truly innovative products when leveraged properly. Designers push the boundaries of new concepts and simplify complexity into elegant solutions. We engineers, in turn, ground that creative exploration with pragmatic realities. It's a delicate balance - and one that M3 Design has mastered by keeping design and engineering under one roof. Our process is collaborative, not siloed, This allows us to merge creative visions with technical requirements throughout the product development process, not just at a handoff meeting. Does it lead to lively debates? For sure. But the resulting give-and-take is what creates products that meet user needs, work as intended every time, and excel in the market.

The Importance of Sharing Knowledge in Industrial Design Throughout my career in the field of industrial design, I have learned that sharing the knowledge we acquire is one of the most important responsibilities we have as professionals. This practice not only enriches our community but also prevents mistakes and fosters innovation. In the realm of industrial design, particularly in packaging design, the complexity and impact of our decisions are often underestimated. Many people think that anyone can package a product effectively, but the reality is that doing so with professionalism and responsibility requires a deep understanding of the specific needs of each product. I have experienced this first-hand in the art sector. Few companies truly understand the repercussions that poor packaging can have on a piece of art. The wrong choice of materials can cause irreparable damage, highlighting the importance of knowing and respecting the original materials of the artwork. Fortunately, today we have numerous platforms that allow us to share our experiences and knowledge without waiting for the student to seek the teacher. This ability to impart what we have learned not only improves our practices but also strengthens our commitment to professional excellence. I encourage all my colleagues in industrial design to reflect on the importance of this responsibility and to actively contribute to the development of our discipline by sharing their knowledge and experiences.

This is especially relevant when it comes to displaying your products as well. If only the same emphasis were given to it. Unfortunately, in-store lighting often falls under the purview of project managers whose primary responsibility is to reduce costs. This creates a tug-of-war between suppliers and clients, as quality inevitably comes at a price. it's often compromised. It's crucial to understand the importance of selecting the right lighting, including the correct color temperature (CCT), beam angle, and minimal Unified Glare Rating (UGR). These factors ensure your product stands out amidst market clutter. I believe that in-store lighting decisions should be made by the product and marketing teams. After all, what's the point of everyone's hard work in developing a product if it's not displayed properly? what are your thoughts on this?
