It is now officially one full week since the culmination of Caribbean Studies Association conference 2024 in St. Lucia. During my arrival welcome video, I had no idea what to expect as a scholar, the publisher of Universal Write Publications, or even on a personal level. What I found was nothing I could have prepared for and so much more than I could have hoped for. As a scholar, the more I learn, the more I realize there is more to learn. I remember, as a graduate student, writing my dissertation, wanting to make it perfect, digging into every piece of research, finding connections, and wanting to include it all, then realizing that there is no way to do it all, especially not by myself. This is the beauty of #academic #discourse, collaboration and #network. The phrase, "The best dissertation is a DONE dissertation" is common among emerging scholars. This can also be applied to imperfect books with gaps in research, imperfect videos with gaps in delivery, imperfect #teachers, #scholars, #epistemology, and #frameworks. While the best scholarship needs to end at some point, the beauty is the do-over, the forthcoming research, finding scholars that are doing work in another #discipline, another part of the world, another language, or from another framework, that makes us richer, more informed, more grounded and stronger TOGETHER! More than anything, this video (vlog) is a celebration of what is possible. I remain a continued learner, willing to stumble, sit at the feet of those who have paved the way, and lift as I climb. This is the community being created @uwpbooks vetted scholars doing the work of #global #africa unapologetic, rigorous, dynamic scholarship. Dr. Ayo Sekai, Ph.D. https://lnkd.in/euNsnTYu

If you're going to the Association of Higher Education Professionals annual conference at Warwick in March, you might want to check out working session 405 on Tuesday morning. I'll be running that session, telling the story of how higher education institutions came to be, illustrated using my #HigherEducationPostcard collection, and helping delegates make the connection between institutions' backstories and how they can navigate political uncertainty today. #HigherEducation #ProfessionalServices #Warwick https://lnkd.in/eXb9QMMS

Birmingham beckons...in just under two weeks time, University of Birmingham will host the THE World 100 Reputation Network Annual Conference. It will be the 12th in-person edition of this annual gathering of university reputation leaders. I think I'm probably the only person to have been at the first, hosted by the University of Hong Kong in 2010, and every subsequent event...although our current chair Andrea Farquhar, Tania Rhodes-Taylor and Alan Ferns can't be too far behind. Phil Baty was also at that very first conference and continues to champion a focus on reputation across Times Higher Education. A great deal has changed in those 14 years, not least the growth of interest in university reputation as a real strategic driver in the sector, and a big topic of conversation in this era of permacrises. This year, we will be balancing a focus on dealing effectively with those crises with the need to focus on the positive impact of universities: hence the title of the conference: Accentuating the Positive, Building Reputation in a Rapidly Changing World. More to come on our great slate of speakers, but above all, I am delighted to be welcoming colleagues from across the world - North America, Europe, Asia, Australasia - to discuss and debate topics including country reputation, the economic impact of universities and - inevitably - the impact of AI on marketing and communications.
