🌟 #MedSafetyWeek 2024 – Prioritising Medicines Safety in Care Homes 🌟 This Medicines Safety Week we are shining a light on the importance of using medicines in the right way to protect care home residents from potential side effects and to remind staff to seek help or report concerns when they do occur. 📢 Here’s how we can all get involved: - Care homes with access to the Immedicare service can reach out to us for medicine related questions, support and guidance. - All health and care staff can talk to colleagues, patients and residents about safe medication use. - Anyone can report side effects from medication to the Medicines Health Regulatory Authority (MHRA) via the Yellow Card Scheme, playing a key part in keeping us all safe by identifying new issues as early as possible. By working together, we can improve medicines safety and continue to provide high-quality care for those who need it most. 🏥💊 #PatientSafety #CareHomeSupport #MedicinesSafety #YellowCard #HealthcareInnovation #MedSafetyWeek2024 #Telemedicine

This past week has been a stark reminder of the challenges within our healthcare system. My wife's e-consult last Thursday, in line with NICE guidelines, led to a 3-day antibiotic prescription. These guidelines aim to curb antibiotic resistance but didn't account for her diabetes or the weekend gap in medical oversight. It was only after her condition worsened that the severity of her situation was fully realized, underscoring the need for a more nuanced application of these guidelines. The incident highlights the essential role of NICE in shaping patient care but also points to a gap in their application. The flexibility within these guidelines, such as the provision for backup antibiotics, is crucial for patients with complex health situations. This experience emphasizes the need for healthcare to balance adherence to guidelines with personalized patient care. I am planning to meet with the board of doctors at our practice to discuss this issue and the absence of a patient participation group, which could foster a more collaborative and patient-centered approach. Sharing our story is not just about addressing our situation but advocating for a healthcare system that prioritizes efficiency and empathy, respecting the unique journeys of its patients. #HealthcareDialogue #PatientCenteredCare #SystemicChange #Advocacy #PersonalizedHealthcare Tagging: NHS, NHS England, Rt Hon Kelly Tolhurst, Medway NHS Foundation Trust for visibility and engagement in this crucial conversation

Unused or waste medications in the home can pose a serious health and safety risk to others, especially to children and pets, if they are not disposed of properly. Pharmacies across Saskatchewan have partnered with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health on the launch of a Safe Medication Disposal Program. Saskatchewan residents are encouraged to take their unused medications back to pharmacies for safe disposal. Your pharmacist will dispose of all medications for you. You just need to follow a few easy steps before taking your unused/expired medications to the pharmacist.
