Kudos to Commissioner Lissette Castañeda, Illinois Housing Development Authority, and RAGE (Resident Association of Greater Englewood) for bringing this closed school to community serving and oriented revitalization. The damage and aftermath of the closure, challenging in its own right, is exacerbated by the more than decade long period of a former community anchor remaining dormant and inoperative. Ja'Net Defell, PMP, LEED Green Associate- identifying a commercial use with some prospect of profitability within a development like this, or immediately adjacent, could be a great investment for a CIV, leveraging and building community wealth with public investment. https://lnkd.in/gHhgN6eP

In 2019 the Public and Affordable Housing Research Corporation ( PAHRC) indicated that expanding access to affordable housing near good school districts can play an important role in connecting low-income and minority families to better schools. This can significantly reduce the achievement gap between these children and their higher-income peers. —excerpt from Housing Humans

As the city navigate pressing challenges, Michelle Mosby highlights the key priorities that must be address to build a thriving community: 1️⃣ Affordable Housing: It's crucial to ensure everyone has access to affordable housing, with a special focus on maintaining and expanding public housing as a vital part of our city's resources. 2️⃣ Public Safety: Safety is the cornerstone of economic growth. A secure environment allows businesses to thrive and communities to prosper. 3️⃣ Education: Collaboration between the city council, school board, and mayor’s office is essential to strengthen our education system—because our future leaders depend on it. 4️⃣ Support for Small Businesses: As a small business owner, Michelle understands the importance of leaving no one behind in our economic growth. We need to be intentional about creating opportunities for all. By focusing on these priorities, Michelle believes that she can significantly improve the lives of our residents and build a vibrant, inclusive community. #CommunityDevelopment #AffordableHousing #PublicSafety #Education #SmallBusinessSupport #RVASmallBusinessShow #RVASmallBusinessNetwork #MeetTheCandidate #RVA

A huge thanks to Jo Leckie 🌟 (Assoc CIPD, Cert CIH) for hosting our first Community Housing Roundtable in Australia this morning! With key speakers Janine Green and Ben Hunt discussing the hot topic of anti-social behaviour (ASB), there were some fabulous insights. Some key takeaways for those who were unable to join (you can also watch the recording): 💡 Stop and think before applying ASB tools to all issues and neighbour complaints. By applying the wrong approach to non-ASB issues you might invertedly be exacerbating the issue for all involved and creating ASB issues which didn't exist before. Well said Janine Green! 💡 By having the right ASB tools in place, you might see an increase in reports by making it easier and more accessible for residents to report their issues but often they can be resolved quicker if you're collecting the right information. Thanks for sharing your ASB App and REACT platforms with us Ben Hunt!

Wow! We ran our first Community Housing Roundtable in Australia today and what a fantastic session it was. The topic was Reporting, Monitoring and Recording ASB. Janine Green and Ben Hunt shared some fantastic best practice tips and ideas. Key takeaways from Janine were the importance of a trauma informed approach, checking other areas of the business for issues that might be impacting on the current situation, recognising that if an issue doesn't meet the threshold for ASB, you still have a duty as a landlord to do something and be careful not to take action against someone who may be a victim themselves. Ben shared the importance of taking a case management approach and having capability to collect, record and extract the data and evidence you need when you need it. This and future roundtables were brought to you through our Big Picture Training Community initiative. Designed to bring people together to share best practice, seek advice and generally support each other. We recorded the session in case you missed it.
