This is disappointing news. Addressing the UK’s lack of aviation capacity is a fundamental challenge we must meet to boost economic growth and ensure Britain is globally competitive in terms of trade, tourism, and as an attractive place to both live and do business. Airport expansion is a vital piece in the puzzle when it comes to the Government’s mission to deliver a high-growth economy. That’s why Civil Engineering Contractors Association (National) supports Luton's endeavour, and airport expansion more generally – for too long this is an issue that has been kicked into the long grass by successive governments. CECA members are primed to deliver the necessary works to meet this challenge, but delay is bad for business and impacts on businesses, communities, and the entire UK economy.
Statement from Justin Richardson on the announcement to extend the deadline for the decision on Luton Rising's London Luton Airport development consent order: The third consecutive delay on a decision to expand London Luton Airport is hugely disappointing. These plans have the backing of local businesses and would deliver long-term economic growth, creating thousands of much-needed jobs. Despite all the talk of growth, and reports of a shrinking economy, coupled with the recent devastating news about the proposed closure of Luton’s Vauxhall van plant, this delay feels particularly frustrating. Expanding the airport represents exactly the kind of bold, high-profile infrastructure project the Government says it wants to encourage. A swift decision is crucial to unlocking opportunities for our county and the country.
