I've spent the day with a close relative at a cancer centre. It is a fairly new centre and we have been so grateful for the standard of care. However....this is the first time I've accompanied him on a visit and wow, it made me think! Despite its new design, the wayfinding 🛣️ (or lack thereof) and resulting frustration is 🫠🫣. Examples of things which *probably* weren't designed with users: - floors named by letters. We were sent to floor 'O' which was actually the third or fourth floor. This stood for outpatients. But no indication anywhere as to what level that 'O' is in the building - and if you decide to take the stairs, you can't get into the clinical space (even though the stairs are accessible from the ground floor open space) - really unclear reception area, with no markings/guidance from the front door. The intuitive reception area you are drawn to is actually for the private centre on the top floor. For people already feeling potentially quite stressed and overwhelmed this isn't great. - signage advises patients to check in using digital tablets, but actually then after getting to the end of the process the tablet tells you that it can't check you in and to seek help. No obvious help was available nearby. - when reporting the check in issue (finally) the staff member tells you the signs are wrong. - finally succeeding in checking in on floor "O" to be sent downstairs for bloods. The digital screen then instructed us back up three floors for height and weight only to be told on arrival there that height and weight can't be done before bloods (though this takes 20-30 seconds and there is no queue) and sent back down to the ground Floor again to sit and wait for bloods 🤔🥴 before then returning again upstairs. We really need to walk through sevices from start to finish from our patient perspectives and embed user centred design throughout. What might seem like a innovative idea (naming floors by the first letter of their function) is actually really disorientating for many people. When we look at small sections it might make sense in its isolation but as a patient experience pathway it's disorientating and adds further stress to their cancer (or other) experience. To add - once we got through the above we were seen promptly and by compassionate and patient staff for which we are grateful. #patientexperience #usercentreddesign

Duke University Health System is expanding its campus in west Cary with a 110,000-square-foot hospital to address the area’s growing healthcare needs. Cary’s population has nearly doubled over the last 20 years, driving demand for more accessible medical care. The new facility will include 40 inpatient beds, gastrointestinal endoscopy services, a CT scanner, and a linear accelerator for cancer treatment. We had a great experience at the DRES 24 Cathlab Symposium this year, taking place on 13th & 14th June in Nijkerk, NL, with a sharp focus on acute cardiac care. The event kicked off with a powerful and moving opening by Bas Muijs, ambassador for the Hartstichting, who shared his personal journey of surviving a myocardial infarction. The program was both impressive and insightful, featuring a Live Case session with VieCuri Medisch Centrum, which delved into the intricacies of residual stenosis after primary PCI. Key discussions throughout the symposium covered a range of critical topics, including: - The importance and impact of complete revascularization. - The revolutionary use of AI in acute cardiology. - Managing acute cardiovascular complications arising from drug use. A significant emphasis was placed on the vital role of ambulances in acute cardiac care. Additionally, we were excited to see the presentation of the CeleBrate trial. Overall, the symposium provided a wealth of knowledge and a platform for engaging discussions, underscoring the continuous advancements and collaborative efforts in the field of acute cardiac care.
