As the market picks up and more roles are released, it reminds me even more so that job descriptions in security need a serious change. Senior roles have always seemed to be poorly written with a dump of skills listed, but over the last few days I have seen a number of job descriptions for Security Analysts & Engineers covering the jobs of 4 people. - 10 years experience - Knowledge of every security framework in existence - Experience running red team engagements - Experience monitoring security tools for 1 million devices - 15 years software engineering experience and can lead DevSecOps & AppSec programs - 4 PhD's - Has been to the moon I understand that budgets may be tight and the compensation of these roles is another matter - but be honest about what the role actually entails rather than hoping for a unicorn. Sure, finding someone who can do everything would be great. But it's important that you understand what you actually want this individual to achieve in line with business and security objectives and write the job descriptions accordingly. Honest and transparent JD's ae the way to go to attract the best people.

I was laid off in mid-January and have taken the time since then to decompress, relax, learn/brush up on some things on my list (AppSec Topics, some DevSecOps, AI/ML, full stack development, and Data Analysis), continue to mentor younger folks in security/development/engineering, and have been advising ThreatNG Security. My background has been primarily in Security Operations/Detection and Response; I have been the first/only security person, started security engineering programs, have a deep background in Python and automation, am a team player and mentor, have direct exposure to AI/ML, have a solid coding background, and have done some AppSec/Code Reviews, among many other things!
