This article discusses the increasing importance of educational institutions to prioritize people over technology when integrating and developing policies around AI use in academic settings. It emphasizes that, ultimately, AI should be used as a tool to enhance the educational experience, promote equity, and support student success — aligning tech adoption to student needs rather than the allure of AI (or other emerging technologies). This people-centred approach ensures that AI serves as a beneficial adjunct to educational strategies and drives real educational advancements. In an opinion piece from Inside Higher Ed, Scott Latham, a professor of strategy at the Manning School of Business, UMass Lowell (University of Massachusetts Lowell), argues that AI's encroachment in higher education threatens to replace human professors. Companies like Tutello are already implementing AI bots for tutoring and teaching. He warns that faculty members' confidence in their unique student relationships and expertise mirrors Kodak's downfall due to its bias against digital technology. Latham advises faculty to emphasize critical thinking, experiential learning, and protecting intellectual property. He urges resistance to AI tools and pilot projects to maintain human-centric education. Latham stresses the importance of addressing AI's long-term impact now to prevent it from undermining traditional teaching roles. While the author presents a cautionary view of AI in higher education, it is important to recognize the significant benefits AI can offer to both faculty and students. AI can enhance classroom experiences by providing analytics on student performance, allowing professors to address learning gaps more effectively. For example, AI can analyze student responses during class activities or assessments, providing immediate feedback and suggesting personalized resources for improvement. AI-powered tools like virtual tutors can offer students immediate assistance and resources outside traditional classroom hours, providing instant feedback on assignments, additional practice problems, and explanations of complex concepts. To leverage AI effectively, educators can use insights and personalized support to enhance their roles and contribute more to student success, ensuring that AI serves as a valuable tool rather than a replacement for human faculty. Engaging in discussions to determine best practices for AI integration is crucial. Each institution should carefully integrate AI to meet its unique needs, ensuring the technology complements and enhances the educational experience without undermining the essential role of human faculty. Mississippi Artificial Intelligence Network (MAIN) is addressing these challenges by leading #Mississippi in AI awareness, education, and training. MAIN has partnered with all 15 community colleges and several major universities in Mississippi to promote the responsible and effective integration of AI in education and the workforce. Let's use AI to enhance the future of education and workforce development. https://lnkd.in/gyqVcwDB #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #GenerativeAI #GenAI #Education #AIinEducation #AIEducation #EdTech #FutureOfLearning #HigherEducation #HigherEd
