In November 2024 it will be three years since I retired from a long career. My expectations of how those three decades would be remembered or appreciated, after significant growth and national firsts realized under my watch, have not become a reality. I had hoped to be treated the way I would have treated someone else in the same situation. It is now apparent that my expectations were too high. After all, this is business, not personal. Or should it be? Have other long-term employees struggled with their expectations vs reality after retirement as far as an ongoing ‘relationship’ with their former employer and coworkers? Perhaps this is a discussion that needs to be held between the retiree and HR to manage those expectations, ie “Yes, we appreciate your decades of hard work, but once you’re gone, you won’t hear from us again.“ Perhaps that type of recognition and respect has gone by the wayside. A bitter pill to swallow after all the times our career responsibilities left our loved ones waiting alone at home. Is there a right answer? I’d love to know your thoughts.

Many people crave the thought of retiring, but as well as having enough in your pots for the income and lifestyle you’d like, you need to plan out how you’re going to occupy yourself. Otherwise you’ll be potentially very bored and unstimulated. At the other end of the scale, you could very quickly mentally and physically decline, and pephaps worse, way before your time. This is where ‘unretiring’ comes into play! So here’s a useful checklist of what to consider, before, during and for after. Basically, you could fall into a tax trap, plus be severely limited as to what you can pay into a pension. Whether you wish or need to retire, unretire, partially retire, do voluntary work etc, you need to think through your plans, realistically cost them, plus ensure you’ve got enough capital and income, to last you potentially many years, whilst still at least keeping pace with inflation. This is all where I come in! To discuss your options via a without commitment complimentary initial consultation, get in touch!

Enjoy a short retirement
Retirement, I can't quite believe that after nearly 16 years at MinterEllison and more years than I care to remember I'm retiring (well at least for now).
