Yesterday (19/11), Mayara Paitz Salvador Appolari successfully defended her master’s dissertation: "Intensified recovery of hesperidin and narirutin from orange peels by ultrasound-assisted extraction: green solvents and Hansen Solubility Parameters." The growing demand for food production follows the increase in the global population. At the same time, the generation of agri-food by-products grows as well, potentially causing environmental issues due to the large amount of waste produced. However, opportunities for valorizing these by-products can be proposed, adding value to these materials and reducing their environmental risks. Oranges are one of the most consumed fruits worldwide, and after the pulp extraction, by-products such as peels are generated. Orange peels contain phenolic compounds with various health benefits, such as hesperidin and narirutin. This study proposes the intensified extraction of these compounds from orange peels using Hansen solubility parameters (HSP), a predictive computational tool, to select green solvents in the extraction process. The extraction technique employed is ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), which promotes a faster and more efficient process for recovering bioactive compounds. Initially, a screening and adjustment of the HSP method was performed using 14 solvents, and then the best combination was proposed for extraction optimization. In the optimization stage, the variables solvent-to-feed ratio (20-50 mL/g), power (240-400 W), and time (1-5 min) were adjusted in a Central Composite Design (CCD). Finally, the optimized method was analyzed in terms of sustainability using the Path2Green metric. The work was conducted at the CNEM graduate program at the School of Applied Sciences, UNICAMP, under the supervision of Mauricio Rostagno and cosupervision by Felipe Sanchez Bragagnolo. She was evaluated by Pedro Henrique Santos (Unicamp) and Dr. Guilherme Dallarmi Sorita (Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina - Campus Trindade) Congratulations, Mayara, on this fantastic achievement! #Sustainability #FoodScience #GreenChemistry #CircularEconomy #Innovation #Research
