Hello! If you have a few minutes, consider voting for this RAID competition where I feature my "Research in One Photo". Vote soon! Please vote for your favourite here: https://lnkd.in/gJz3ZwFg Here is a little background accompanying the photo: 🦪🐚 Half-pearl (also known as mabé pearl) jewellery and shellcraft are livelihood activities that rely on marine resources from small-scale fisheries and aquaculture in Papua New Guinea. While shellcraft is known to provide essential social and economic benefits for coastal communities, small-scale fisheries associated with shellcraft were poorly understood. My PhD research has shown that shellcraft fisheries are mostly sustainable and that they rely on over 80 species. Less than 10% of shells from mollusc consumption is used for shellcraft in Papua New Guinea, meaning that shellcraft has its own fishery.

Learn about BRUVS from the best in the biz…
My latest piece for OceanX is about a subject near and dear to me. I've wanted to make something featuring BRUVS footage and explaining how cool the method is since I started my MSc research back in 2019, and here it is! Be sure to check out the work that the featured scientists are doing at Save Our Seas Foundation (SOSF), Island Conservation Society, and University of Seychelles.

Helt hinsides miljøkriminalitet, 56,000 turen fugleegg samlet inn Norge ulovlig. Politiet jobber for å avdekke alle artene, her er det truet arter av mange typer. Hør saken på NRKradio i lenken. Norway's largest criminal collection of illegal eggs of wild birds recently confiscated by the police, 16 people involved. 56,000(!) thousand eggs, many types of red listed birds, from sea birds to raptors. It is completely illegal to keep and take wild eggs and animals in Norway. These egg collections are compared to 'stamp collections' as people collect their own sets of eggs, not just one, and of many species. The collection is now in the hands of a museum who will help the police identify all the species and the population damage it has done to Norwegian avian fauna, updates to come on the case followed very strickt penalties. https://lnkd.in/d5x2qU6k

An interactive map is boosting the odds for successful restoration of the dwindling native Olympia oyster along much of the North American West Coast. The map draws on 2,000-plus records for this species and the non-native Pacific oyster, and by doing so, illustrates where healthy oyster networks are located, and where targeted restoration efforts could yield big benefits. https://lnkd.in/eFEYCFA5

A sea hare: you can observe marine animals in very shallow water, with enough patience, and if you know where to look. #scicomm #popularscience #marinebiology https://lnkd.in/dfYE8aR7

South Africa is making strides in decarbonisation.
At the end of October 2023, South Africa's National Assembly voted to pass the Climate Change Bill - a massive milestone that sets the country apart as one of the few in the world to enact climate change into law. Bakang Moeng, Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA) Advocacy, Public Policy, and Sustainability Specialist, gives some insight into this new milestone.
