In a presentation I give on AI progress, I show the video of Figure 01 responding to human commands via conversation. It always blows people away who haven’t seen it and aren’t familiar with how fast AI and robotics are progressing. The latest Figure robot, 02, looks much sleeker and more refined in terms of hardware. But in this video, they don’t demonstrate the same type of interaction with humans as they did in the earlier video. I’d love to see how it does with this now, given that the previous interaction was powered by OpenAI models, OpenAI has released new models since then, and it’s possible that Figure has access to unreleased OpenAI models (they talk about “custom AI models” for speech-to-speech in their post; I wonder if these are fine-tuned versions of GPT-4o).

The era of AI and robotics is beginning. Think how crazy generative AI is already, and will be when it has a body. What has been missing in the past, was that robots did not have AI capabilities i.e. neuronal networks to perceive and interact with their environment intelligently and autonomous, without explicitly being programmed. Figure announces the Figure 02, their humanoid robot! This is Figure's latest push in the face of intense competition with Tesla's Optimus, Apptronik's Apollo, and Agility Robotics' Digit. According to Figure's Founder, Brett Adcock, the conceptual design review was in February 2023, which highlights the grueling timelines it takes to make these hardware products a reality. Figure 02 is visually stunning, and I'm excited to see what tasks it can accomplish in the real world. Some initial thoughts: 1) Figure continues to advertise VLM capabilities. They are the only humanoid to offer this, but I have my doubts that VLM (speech-to-speech) is actually useful. 2) While the actuation of the hand was impressive, in the demo of Figure 02 at the BMW Group plant, it seemed to struggle with grasping the objects 3) This demo was beautifully shot. This is the new era of hardware—instead of people holding their breath for the unveiling of the new iPhone, we'll be waiting for humanoid hype videos instead. I'm certainly not complaining! What are your thoughts?
