As the year winds down, I’ve found myself reflecting on the trail I’ve walked in 2024—a mix of adventure, growth, and cherished memories. Personally, it’s been a year of focusing on what truly matters: traveling with my kids while they’re still young enough to enjoy tagging along, prioritizing health, and meeting up with friends to create memories that will last a lifetime. These moments remind me why the journey is as important as the destination. Professionally, I took the plunge into the world of entrepreneurship and started my own venture, Beyond Axis. It’s been a step beyond the corporate world—a chance to create something meaningful, make an impact, and maybe even leave a legacy. None of this would have been possible without the incredible support from my family and friends (After all, I’m a Gujrati, and entrepreneurship is in our blood! 😄). Now, it feels like I’m at base camp—time to pitch the tent, sip a warm drink, and enjoy the view of the trail behind me. As the year draws to a close, as does everyone, I decided to reflect on the year gone by. Here are a few takeaways from my personal and professional life that would hopefully resonate with the readers of this post: - Not everything requires a reaction, sometimes it’s absolutely alright to let people live in their own bubble. - No one cares about what you are doing/saying as much as you think/believe. - It is essential to be grateful everyday. For the air you breathe, food you eat and the shelter above your head. You’re far luckier than most in the world. - Kindness goes a tremendously long way. Be kind to anyone and everyone around you. - While working hard is amazing and highly appreciated, working smartly sets you apart from others. - Dress well. The number of opportunities you can create for yourself while being well dressed are unparalleled. You’re confident and feel good about yourself. - Smile. A friendly smile to anyone, be it a friend or absolute stranger will break more ice than you imagine. - Give back. In whatever form and manner you can. Doesn’t matter big or small. - Show up. Whether it’s for your team or a friend or family, sometimes showing up is enough. - Be a good listener. Most people are lost in speaking and are hardly ever listening. Pause, listen and if needed, only then react. Sometimes people just need a listening ear, not advice. - Stay focused. Set your goals, work towards achieving them and leave no stone unturned to do your absolute best. There will be hurdles along the way, never let them bog you down. - Last but most certainly not the least, don’t make anyone feel terrible about being themselves. It’s that time of year again! 🎅🏻🤶 As I sit here looking at the waves of the Indian Ocean from my office, reflecting on the year that’s nearly behind us, I am overwhelmed by a mix of emotions - warm nostalgia, tingling excitement, and the less bright memories of times when my life wasn’t as abundant. In just fifteen years, I’ve transformed from having a Christmas tree that resembled a stick in the corner of my apartment in Ottawa, Canada, toasting the holiday season alone against a backdrop of snow and blizzards, to now, where a magnificent 2-meter tree glimmers in gold, red, and metallic green, sparkling against the white stone fireplace of my coastal living room. The sun filters through my sheer curtains, and my heart swells with joy as I hear my children laughing and guessing what’s hidden beneath the brightly wrapped presents. I am incredibly grateful for how far I’ve come. Yet, I am acutely aware of how challenging this season can be for many, as it has been for me at different times in my life. I don’t want this post to focus on the hours I’ve worked, the notable people I’ve met, or the successes I’ve achieved in 2024. Nor do I want it to be about my services, my website, or my work priorities for 2025. Instead, I have a significant request for the leaders in my life. Please recognise that this moment isn’t always filled with festive cheer; it can be a difficult time for many. Your role as leaders is to guide your teams with grace and empathy.
