METUPUK volunteer Helen Stewart has written a blog about the the hidden danger lurking in her family; the mutated gene BRCA2. She is living with MBC and has inherited the faulty gene from her mother and now has the agonising knowledge that she may have passed it down to her own children.  Out of every 100 women who have a faulty BRCA2 gene, 40 to 85 of these will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Between 10 and 27 women will develop ovarian cancer (NHS website).  Men with BRCA2 mutation are at increased risk of breast cancer and prostate cancer. A recent study by Le Compte et al. illustrates how RNA-Seq can be used to characterize organoids as models for cancer treatment and identify intra-patient response heterogeneity in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, one of the most lethal cancers. RNA-Seq provides a powerful tool that can be used to study gene expression in organoids, and allows identification of genes that are associated with #cancer progression and #drug resistance to develop new therapies for pancreatic cancer in the future. Lung cancer can be genetically associated. 👉Patients with Li-Fraumeni syndrome have 20times higher risk of developing Lung cancer compared to normal population. 👉Lung is detected at earlier age ( less than 50y ) 👉Often there is no family history of lung cancer 👉Such high risk patients need to be on SCREENING programs to help detect cancer earlier. #Lungcancer #Genetictesting #precisiononcology

In honor of #BreastCancerAwareness month, I wanted to do a post about how #pharmacogenomics can impact breast cancer treatment. People with hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer are frequently started on anti-hormonal treatments to control the cancer and prevent recurrence. The most frequently used is tamoxifen. Tamoxifen is metabolized (processed) in the body by a gene named CYP2D6, to a more active form named endoxifen. If patients have less active forms of this gene, tamoxifen might not work well because sufficient levels of endoxifen won’t be produced. In these patients, guidelines recommended an alternative class of treatment, called aromatase inhibitors, instead. Pharmacogenomics isn’t just a novelty— it’s actually legitimate, scientific, and crucial to providing optimal care. #cancer #BreastCancer #innovation
